Imagine purchasing the perfect engagement ring. See the joy, the bright sparkle in the eyes of your beloved. To propose marriage to her, get down on your right knee, carefully place it on your beloved’s finger and... It turns out that it doesn’t fit in size - it’s big. The future wife will not be able to wear it and risks losing it.

Do not panic! Find out how to make your wedding ring smaller in this article.

In what cases it is impossible to reduce the ring

Before you go to a jeweler with a request to reduce your wedding ring, it is worth finding out why he may refuse such work and in what cases the ring size cannot be changed.

  • First of all, not every jeweler will undertake such work if there are notches or inserts on the jewelry. The thing is that working with such a ring requires extreme care and special tools from the master. The reduction process consists of disassembling the ring, processing its parts separately and soldering all the parts together. If a real craftsman worked on the jewelry, then the soldering points will not be noticeable: only a small seam next to the sample will remind you that the ring has been altered.
  • Engravings on rings also create a lot of difficulties. Most often, the integrity of the engraving suffers when the ring is reduced, so you need to be prepared for the fact that after this the engraving will have to be restored or completely sanded.
  • Making a platinum engagement ring smaller is also a big challenge. Since platinum is denser than gold, special tools will be needed to work with this material. Not every jeweler blacksmith has these tools, so the reduction of such rings is often refused.

It is also worth considering that the price of work to reduce a wedding ring depends not only on the material of the jewelry, but on the complexity of the design and the skill of the jeweler.

What to do when the ring gets bigger?

The fingers of the left and right hands differ by 1–2 sizes. It happens that a piece of jewelry that fits perfectly on your finger on your engagement or wedding day requires a little correction after some time.

There are situations when the finger swells or shrinks immediately after measurement. Its thickness may vary due to:

  • temperature changes,
  • blood pressure,
  • swelling caused by work, contact with chemicals,
  • weight loss.

When something becomes free, many people rejoice. It's different with jewelry. Clothes can be changed, but jewelry is bought for a long time and worn constantly.

Since most models of wedding rings have a classic shape (semicircular, flat), their global modification is carried out by a professional jeweler. The cost of his work depends on the shape, type of decoration, and the place where the correction will be performed. This service is provided immediately or within 1-2 business days.

Before deciding on correction, you should consult with a specialist to see if this procedure makes sense. He may refuse if a complex inscription is applied to the product, or if there are precious stones that are difficult to remove, and then insert and securely fasten without disturbing the design.

Reducing a Simple Gold Ring

If the engagement ring is a simple gold band, then there will most likely be no problems with changing its size. In only one case, the question of whether it is possible to make a gold engagement ring smaller can be answered with a refusal - if it was made by hand and there is a weld seam. But more often than not, the jeweler has all the necessary equipment to work with such jewelry, and there are no particular problems with it.

Correction of ring size by reduction is carried out in two ways:

  • The first method is to remove part of the shank and process the decoration in such a way that the junction of its parts is not noticeable. In this way, you can reduce the size of an engagement ring with stones, only before work you need to remove them from the frame.
  • A simpler and more common way to reduce rings is to use a punch. This is a special tool that consists of molds and holders. With their help, a mechanical change in the size of the decoration occurs. When working with a punch, the ring is first treated with flux, then fired to make it soft and pliable, after which the fumes are removed by bleaching and cleaning. Next, the ring is placed in the mold, secured on top with a holder and mechanically reduced to the desired size on both sides using hammers.

Reducing rings with stone inserts

Remaking rings with stones is a more painstaking job than fitting engagement rings and other plain rings. They are usually reduced by cutting. But not in every model you can simply remove the excess and solder the seam:

  • even with a slight decrease in the diameter of the tire (by 1–1.5 sizes), the frame sometimes becomes deformed, no longer tightly covers the stone, and it is easy to lose it;
  • In the place where the frame is attached, the metal may burst during processing or after some time.

Therefore, large stones are removed from the frame, and after finishing the work, the shape of the fastening is corrected. In some cases, it is necessary to cut off the frame itself, then it is soldered in place of the already reduced ring. Small stones are not removed from massive rings, but on thin ones, the inserts on the top of the rim can be left alone (for example, small diamonds arranged in a row on a gold ring).

Ring size measurements

Are you afraid that the workshop will replace your inserts? Before going there, submit the product for gemological examination, after which they will put a tag on it with a description of the stones: their number, characteristics and cost. When leaving the ring in the workshop, ask the master to cut out the fragment so as not to damage the hallmark - re-branding the item can be difficult, especially if it is antique.

How to reduce the size of a ring in a jewelry workshop

You can reduce the diameter of a ring made of gold or other material using one of three methods:

  1. Cutting out. The specialist reduces the accessory by removing 3-4 mm.
  2. Squeezing. The metal is heated, cooled slightly and covered with a punch (press) in special equipment. The jeweler hits the punch and thereby compacts the metal. The accessory is then cleaned and polished.
  3. Insert. Another rim is soldered into the decoration, which makes the product smaller.

The last method is the safest. However, jewelers choose an option based on the features of the product. For example, smooth accessories will withstand any treatment, but openwork decorations are best adjusted using a headband.

Reduce ring size with insert

It is more difficult to change the size of a ring with a stone. Even with minor adjustments, the frame becomes deformed and no longer holds the insert, which leads to its loss.

Most often, to, for example, reduce the size of a gold ring with diamonds, cutting is used. Large inserts are removed from the frame, while small ones remain in place. At the end of the work, the master corrects the fastenings.

How much will it cost to have a gold ring reduced in size? If the accessory is without decorative elements, the price will be 500-1000 rubles. The price is influenced by the complexity of the jewelry, the quality of the alloy and the method the jeweler chooses.

Jeweler's opinion

Molokanov N.M.

Jeweler, 26 years of experience in jewelry production.

Requests to reduce the size of jewelry come in every day; this is one of the most common services. The procedure completely depends on the product itself; simple rings are compressed in 30 minutes; reduction of openwork jewelry can take several days. Costume jewelry, as a rule, is not reduced, there is too great a risk of breaking the product. Also, rings covered with paths of small stones do not reduce their size.

Which rings cannot be reduced?

Jewelers refuse to adjust items made from base metals. There are three reasons for this:

  1. Unknown alloy. The master does not know what will happen to the material after exposure.
  2. Loss of shape and shade during work. Costume jewelry can crumble when compressed, turn black from overheating, and lose its aesthetics after cutting.
  3. Toxicity. After processing, oxidation is possible. Then the alloy releases substances harmful to humans.

Making a silver ring one size smaller is also not always possible. If the jewelry is plated with rhodium, it will deteriorate when heated. The jeweler will be able to partially restore the aesthetics of the accessory, but it will not be possible to return it to its original shade.

The design of the decoration also matters. If the product has complex patterns or openwork filigree, changing it will be problematic or impossible.

Jewelry equipment

Processing platinum requires special equipment - a laser cutting tool and a high-temperature crucible for heating and forging. This is not available in every jewelry workshop, so adjusting platinum jewelry is not always possible.

Cost of jewelry work

You finally decided to trust the professionals and go to a jewelry workshop. This is a more reliable and thorough method, although it requires some costs:

  1. If it is possible to reduce the ring by cutting or squeezing, the price will start from 400 rubles. – for the simplest products.
  2. If common methods are not possible, then the master may request from 1000 rubles. and higher for adding metal inside the product, and sometimes when the work is highly complex, jewelers completely refuse to adjust the sizes.

Important! The cost of downsizing a ring will increase as the complexity of the ring's shape increases, and depending on the value of the stones and their number. The simplest treatment can be completed in 30-40 minutes. , for more complex processes it will take up to 3 days.

How to reduce ring size at home

If a specialist refuses to work or you don’t want to contact him, you can reduce the ring size at home. Self-adjustment options:

  1. Transparent nail polish. Apply 2-3 layers inside the accessory.
  2. Flesh-colored adhesive plaster. Cut a strip of plaster and glue it inside the product.
  3. Silicone lining for rings. These are the inserts that professionals use. You can buy them in specialized stores.
  4. Epoxy adhesive. Prepare it according to the instructions and apply a thin layer. Repeat twice if necessary.
  5. A homemade insert for a ring from a dropper tube or a helium rod. Cut a piece up to 1 cm in size lengthwise, melt the edges over a fire and secure it on the inside of the product.

Reducing ring size at home

The easiest method is to apply clear, clear nail polish. If necessary, ring resizing can be resumed using this method. The average wear time is three months.

It will be safer for the product and skin to use silicone rings to reduce the size. The inserts are made from natural material, but the wearing period is reduced to one month. Before applying any product to the ring, make sure you are not allergic.

About clinical studies

What are clinical trials and why are they needed?

These are studies in which people (volunteers) participate and during which scientists find out whether a new drug, treatment or medical device is more effective and safer for human health than existing ones.

The main goal of clinical research is to find the best way to prevent, diagnose and treat a particular disease. Conducting clinical research is necessary to develop medicine, improve people's quality of life, and to make new treatments available to everyone.

Three ways

What to do if the ring is large in size? Jewelers can reduce size in three ways: adding, cutting and shrinking. Addition is considered the most rare procedure. More expensive in price. Another thin one is added inside the ring, and because of this the size becomes smaller. Compression is the application of high temperature. During this procedure, the ring becomes smaller. Cutting occurs as follows: simply part of the metal is removed, and the product becomes much smaller.

How are they carried out?

Each study has four stages (phases):

Phase I

— researchers are testing a drug or treatment method for the first time with a small group of people
(20-80 people)
.
The purpose of this stage is to find out how safe the drug or treatment is and to identify side effects. This stage can involve both healthy people and people with a suitable medical condition
. To begin Phase I of the clinical trial, scientists spent several years conducting hundreds of other tests, including safety tests, using laboratory animals whose metabolism is as close as possible to humans;

II phase

— researchers give a drug or treatment to a larger group of people
(100–300 people)
to determine its effectiveness and continue to study its safety. This stage involves people with a suitable disease;

III phase

- Researchers provide a drug or treatment to large groups of people
(1000-3000 people)
to
confirm its effectiveness, compare it with the gold standard (or placebo)
, and gather additional information that will allow it to be used safely.
Sometimes other, rare side effects are identified at this stage. It also involves people with a qualifying medical condition. If phase III is successful, the drug is registered with the Ministry of Health
and doctors are able to prescribe it;

IV phase

— Researchers continue to monitor information about the safety, effectiveness, side effects and optimal use of the drug after it is registered and becomes available to all patients.

It is believed that the most accurate results are obtained by a research method when neither the doctor nor the participant knows which drug - new or existing - the patient is taking. This type of study is called "double-blind"

.
This is done so that doctors do not intuitively influence the distribution of patients. If only the participant is unaware of the drug, the study is called single-blind
.

To conduct a clinical trial (especially a blinded trial), doctors can use a technique called randomization

— random distribution of study participants into groups (new drug and existing drug or placebo). This method is necessary to minimize subjectivity in the distribution of patients. Therefore, this procedure is usually carried out using a special computer program.

Benefits and risks for participants. pros

  • free access to new treatments before they become widely used;
  • quality care, which usually far exceeds that available in routine practice;
  • participation in the development of medicine and the search for new effective treatment methods, which may be useful not only for you, but also for other patients, which may include family members;
  • sometimes doctors continue to observe and provide assistance after the study ends.
