How to make a beautiful bouquet of orchids at home with your own hands

Not many people know that an orchid can not only decorate the windowsill of a house, but is also successfully used to create floral arrangements. The advantage of a bouquet with orchids is that the flower has no seasonality and is freely available all year round. Orchids look very original and exotic in a bouquet; it’s not for nothing that some call them moth flowers for their rare bud shape.

Until recently, an orchid was something prohibitive and expensive. Only rich people could afford a photo with a bouquet of orchids. It was considered almost impossible to get it for growing at home, not to mention combining it with other flowers in bouquets.

As legend has it, the name of the flower was given by the ancient Greek goddess Orchid. She was ethereal and the most beautiful of all and created a flower similar to herself. That is why the orchid does not have real roots, and it receives nutrients from the air. This is a key factor due to which the orchid remains fresh in the bouquet longer than other flowers.

How to make a beautiful bouquet of orchids with your own hands

Even a beginner in floristry can assemble a bouquet of orchids. There are practically no difficulties in the process. Especially if you have the desire, creativity and some available tools.

Various combinations of orchids with other flowers are possible. And here it will be at its best, regardless of what the florist decides to combine it with: wildflowers or noble ones.

The orchid is the most popular in wedding arrangements, as the variety of its colors is amazing. A bouquet of orchids will certainly suit any dress and wedding theme.

The combination of orchids and roses in the composition looks very gentle. Both flowers are similar in that they can be used to create bouquets of any shape and size.

Orchids in a bouquet will be appropriate everywhere: at a wedding on the islands, a traditional ceremony and at a royal-style party. The main thing is to choose the shade of the flower that is appropriate for the celebration.

What is required to create

To create compositions, it is best to use phalaenopsis or dendrobiums. These are lush flowers that will not get lost among others; they have long legs. These varieties make delicate and elegant bouquets.

If other flowers are used, you need to remember the color palette, which we will describe below. In addition, you will need intuition and originality. For example, if you choose roses, you need to very skillfully arrange the composition, since these are rival flowers. You will also need floral tubes, coconut or other fiber, sticks, wire, ribbons or lace in color, scissors, a knife and a stapler. Often, orchids and other flowers can be taken in capsules; these may also be needed. This will keep it fresh longer.

Which orchid to choose for a bouquet

There are more than 2,000 species of orchids in nature; they grow all over the globe with the exception of Antarctica, of course. Not everyone is suitable for cutting and feels comfortable in bouquets of orchids.

The most suitable types:

Cymbidium

The variety is resilient and can survive cut in water for more than a month. The aroma of the flower is pleasant, the color range is very diverse: from white to brown. In a bouquet it can remain on a branch or be placed on special water capsules.

Phalaenopsis

A common domesticated variety, also suitable for cutting. Just like the previous type, it is durable and can stand in water for more than 3 weeks. Looks beautiful in combination with many colors. The most popular combinations: with roses, peony tulips, peonies. This variety has no odor. Phalaenopsis is loved for its durability, combinatorial ability and attractive appearance. Popular in wedding floristry.

Wanda

Fashionable variety. We love Versace and are often used in the design of fashion shows. It lasts about three weeks. Prized for its striking colors. The most popular shades: blue, purple, pink. But it also comes in yellow, white, terracotta and orange.

Which lamp to choose for additional lighting of an orchid

Dendrobium

The most popular variety of bouquet orchids, the optimal price-quality ratio. Not very long lasting, but has beautiful colors. In bouquets, three inflorescences are often placed in capsules. There are 7-8 inflorescences in a branch. Even just one can form a decent bouquet. When decorating weddings or anniversaries, dendrobium is often strung on a fishing line and cascaded down in the form of living curtains.

Cattleya

She is called the queen of orchids, and anyone who has ever seen her does not remain indifferent. Cattleya is usually placed in the center of the bouquet; it looks advantageous in mono-bouquets or exotic compositions. True, a cut flower only lives for a week.

When choosing an orchid for a bouquet, you should focus on the temperature conditions of the room. Orchids are capricious in this regard. If the room temperature is more than 24 degrees, then you should choose Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis varieties. And Cymbidium is resistant to low temperatures. Therefore, the bouquet should have a tag indicating the varietal of the flower so that the owner understands how to care for it.

Examples of wedding compositions

The fashion of recent years requires the abandonment of traditional combinations in favor of unusual and bold ones. This approach is especially popular in European floristry, where they know how to give a sophisticated look even to arrangements of field herbs or garden crops. Behind the simple and seemingly naturally formed compositions there is a huge amount of work and skill. But it’s still worth trying to do something similar at home, following detailed descriptions or focusing on photo and video instructions.

A lot of sun

A more than original solution for a wedding in country or rustic style. It would seem that there is nothing more distant from each other than aristocratic Cymbidiums and... sunflowers. However, this “union” cannot be called disharmonious.

In addition to the “main characters,” the composition will need:

  • peony and small bush roses of a yellow hue;
  • succulent haworthia striped;
  • craspedia;
  • tape, floral wire, stemmed flasks;
  • decorative twine.

Succulents that do not have long stems of their own are placed on a wire, secured with tape.

Cymbidiums are considered quite hardy, but it is better to separate them from the peduncle by inserting them into a flask with water and feed for cut plants. After this, you can begin assembling the bouquet arrangement. We start with sunflowers and roses. The technique, as always, is spiral, allowing you to create maximum volume.

We gradually complement the arrangement with other plants: haworthia and dried flowers. We raise cymbidiums a little above the general level, thus emphasizing their main role.

We fasten the finished composition with tape, or even better, with anchor tape, which is not afraid of water. Trim off unnecessary stems. As a rule, florists take the arrangement in their hand to make it comfortable to hold and remove all flower stems 1 cm below the edge of the palm. We wrap the remaining stems with twine. If the wire holder for succulents is visible, it is removed a little higher.

The sunny bouquet is ready. There is no need to be afraid of its shade - yellow flowers have long symbolized not separation, but a strong, successful marriage and a happy future together.

"Butterflies on Roses"

A wedding bouquet of peonies and white Phalaenopsis orchids looks delicate and airy. Here we used 2 varieties of “butterfly flower” – Schiller with small buds and a large single Singolo.

An amazing detail - the florists decided to add pink lilies to the arrangement and, despite the prohibitions, it turned out very beautiful.

The basis of the composition is also made up of peonies and roses.

But there is a little trick: phalaenopsis are added to the almost assembled bouquet composition, towering above it. Now they are clearly visible against the background of other components.

To make the leg of the wedding accessory look neater, it is wrapped with tape almost the entire length. And then they hide the technical fastening under the linen braid.

The delicate bouquet is ready.

Breath of the sea

A bouquet of blue or purple orchids is often used for a nautical-themed wedding. Exotic flowers go well with traditional accessories for this trend. For example, sea shells and stars.

Two varieties of exotics were used: Cymbidium and Vanda violet. And also: peonies, English roses and callas.

It is better to install orchid buds in a supporting solution.

We assemble the arrangement as usual, monitoring the distribution of shades and inflorescences of the same size.

The fun part is adding sea shells. They are pre-drilled with the thinnest drill and installed on the wire.

You can also decorate the middles of orchids with small shells. For this purpose, only cold floral glue is used, which is completely safe for plants.

Snow-white cascade

In addition to round bouquet arrangements, orchids are very often used in cascades. It is difficult for novice florists to cope with such a flower “waterfall”, but if a special frame comes to the rescue, the task is immediately simplified.

A similar device finished with stabilized moss looks impressive. The arrangement includes:

  • white Phalaenopsis, eustoma, callas and spray roses;
  • echeveria succulent;
  • eucalyptus and viburnum.

Echveria is removed from the ground with its roots (after the arrangement is dismantled, the flower is planted back). Tape tape is carefully tied to a wooden skewer. One by one, insert the flowers into the frame, fix the stems, trim them and decorate them with a lace cuff.

In a “nest” of moss, a cascading bouquet looks great.

What do orchids go with in a bouquet?

Orchids always occupy the center of the bouquet. If orchids are combined with tropical flowers, then it is not necessary to place it in the center of the composition. This rule doesn't apply here. Their proximity to simple flowers, such as daisies and gerberas, looks out of place.

As a company for orchids, you should choose more noble flowers, for example, roses, callas, sterlitzia and others. A bouquet with orchids and added roses is good form. A bouquet of pure white orchids is exclusively a wedding theme. A bouquet of orchids in a decorated box looks stylish and youthful. There are actually a lot of variations.

Advantages over other colors

One of the undoubted advantages of the orchid is its year-round availability. Another plus is the breadth of color shades. The uniqueness and delicacy of these flowers make them a good solution for compositions that are intended even for such a special occasion as a wedding. Moreover, with proper care of flowers, they can live for almost a month. When composing such a bouquet, carefully examine each flower for flaws: the slightest hint of brownish spots or creases on the petals indicates that wilting is just around the corner, and very soon the plant will begin to rot.

Self-assembly of the bouquet

Necessary tools during the work process:

  1. Capsules for floristry on legs
  2. Wire
  3. Coconut fiber
  4. Sharp knife
  5. Tape
  6. Package
  7. Decorative elements like clothespins, bows, lace, etc.

Procedure:

  • The capsules are wrapped in coconut fiber and filled with water. An orchid is placed inside each one in such a way as to prevent air from entering. This is a fundamental point when forming a composition.
  • Next, the author must use his imagination: add greenery or decorative elements, wrap it in paper, film, or put the bouquet in a cardboard box. Who likes what more?

How to make a panel

You need to cut out the orchid petals using the templates. Stretch their edges a little to give the desired shape. Connect the petals with wire, tint the middle of the flower a little.

Cut out and frame the background of the desired size. Glue flowers and leaves onto the finished base. The stem can be made from twisted colored paper or a bush twig.

The size and design of the panel can be varied as desired. The craft will perfectly complement the interior of any room.

Rules for caring for a bouquet of orchids

To create comfortable conditions for a tropical flower, the first step is to create an average temperature and humidity of 50-70%. You should spray the plants daily with warm water from a spray bottle. Drafts also shorten the life of the bouquet.

A few lifehacks:

  1. Trim flower stems daily.
  2. Feeding the bouquet with a special composition.
  3. It is allowed to bathe the bouquet to saturate it with moisture (no more than 10 minutes in time).
  4. Avoid placing the bouquet near a radiator or in a draft.
  5. The proximity of a bouquet to a fruit vase is also undesirable.

In floristics, orchids are at the highest level and are equal to diamonds, thereby being considered a sign of good taste, status and sophistication. Beautiful bouquets of flowers with orchids are ordered for special occasions and to express higher feelings. You don't have to spend a lot on this.

If you have good imagination and creativity, creating compositions for any holiday or occasion will not be difficult, and the exotic luxury of orchids will make them the optimal choice for creating various flower variations.
