Oh, it’s full, the box is full, there’s chintz and brocade... -... As soon as I see the black-eyed one, I’ll put all the goods away...
This is a Russian folk song - you say. Not certainly in that way. Words by N.A. Nekrasov, a famous Russian poet and writer, and the cheerful, playful song about a daring merchant has become truly popular. It's called “Peddlers”. But we won’t talk about them now, although who knows...
Brocade is magnificent and luxurious, bright and patterned. Brocade is a fabric with a silk base and metal wefts that cover the entire surface, or serve as a background for additional silk wefts that form a pattern.
Brocade fabric and brocade clothing - history of origin
Translated from Tatar par?a - brocade, pattern. Initially, brocade was imported to Russia from Turkey and Iran, and then from Italy, Spain and France. It was these merchant peddlers who were engaged in bringing brocade to Russia. In those ancient times, until the 18th century, silk and brocade fabrics were not yet produced in Russia. But our skilled embroiderers could reproduce the patterns and texture of the fabric with their skill. Precious clothes amazed Europeans who visited Russia with the wealth and abundance of brocade fabrics decorated with pearls, precious stones, and the shine of gold.
In the flickering of candles and lamps in the church during the liturgy, the brilliance and radiance of gold so captured the imagination, especially of foreign guests, that they talked and wrote about it, all this created an emotional atmosphere, turning everything around into a mysterious world, into a dazzling spectacle.
Since this fabric was for ceremonial occasions, it was used primarily in church vestments and at the royal court.
What about the people? Everyone loved brocade. But the first manufactories for the production of silk, as well as brocade, appeared in Russia at the beginning of the 18th century. Now our brocade was famous for its beauty and brilliance. From the beginning of the 18th century, traditional Russian clothes could only be worn by peasants, merchants, and townspeople, since Tsar Peter I forcibly forbade his subjects of the noble class to put on their Russian clothes. Everyone looked to the west, for everyone only one thing was important - what was it like in Paris. So the fate of the Russian costume was decided. But still, luxurious brocade did not leave the wardrobe of Russian nobles. The paintings of Russian artists speak about this.
And already in the 19th century, a huge amount of brocade was produced, which was intended not only for church and palace needs, but also specifically for the manufacture of peasant costumes.
...New fabrics appeared, era replaced era...
A miracle of luxury, brilliance and splendor, that’s what can be said about brocade. And now we see brocade on the catwalks. And now clothes made of brocade will help revive something of the past, lost over the centuries - to dress in the Baroque style, which many people really like.
Elegant brocade clothing will be the best option for a special occasion, especially for the evening and night of the New Year. But let's think a little and see that it can be worn not only in a formal situation... You can make a lot from brocade: both clothes and accessories.
Composition and types of fabric
To produce brocade fiber in ancient times, only natural materials were used, such as silk fibers, silver and gold thread. Later, when they began to produce brocade in industrial conditions, manufacturers switched to more economical materials:
- cotton
- linen
- lightweight metal alloys
Modern retail outlets offer their customers a choice of both synthetic and completely natural brocade. We learned how to make this fabric from lycra, viscose and other artificial materials. The price of brocade is completely determined by its composition: the more expensive the material. the more it contains all-natural ingredients.
There are 3 types of brocade:
- viscose based
- lycra based
- silk based

Gold brocade dress is an ideal purchase for all times
Let's return to our favorite topic - impractical fashion, which has taken root in our everyday wardrobes this season. Today on the agenda is a mini dress made of gold brocade, which we recommend wearing on a variety of occasions. Remember the boom in popularity of the “Don’t be extra” memes? So, now is the time to turn up the “extra-ness” to the maximum. We recommend getting a short, playful outfit made of iridescent fabric to wear with flat shoes during the day. We like the option of pairing it with rubber black Birkenstocks, but more sophisticated fashionistas will go for classic Gucci leather mules (the gold hardware will perfectly match the fabric of the dress) or masculine flat loafers. Pick up a beaded theatrical pouch from the 1920s, a leather purse or even a baguette, throw a men's trench coat over your shoulders on a cool day and head to brunch or the office. In the evening, you can safely put on velvet platform sandals or thick heels, tie your hair in a low ponytail and try yourself in the image of a modern Edie Sedgwick.
If you still think that brocade is something mothballed, we suggest turning to the spring-summer 2022 shows. In the lookbooks of Simone Rocha, Patou, Moschino and many other brands, vestments made of golden silk appeared, and some of the designers suggested combine them with metallic ballet flats, and for some with fishnet tights and heeled pumps. Dolce & Gabbana actually has a separate brocade line for this warm season. Indeed, in the West, in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, only representatives of the richest strata of society wore brocade, but, in our opinion, this makes it attractive to fashion designers even today.

Patou spring-summer 2021 We found the perfect golden dress from Natalia Turovnikova. To refresh your memory, re-read our interview with her, in which she says that just such a thing is an absolute must-have for spring. “Natasha’s Dresses” is an homage to Laura Ashley models from the 1980s, albeit modernized and brought to mind. Natalia’s goal is to provide her clients with maximum comfort. Instead of fasteners on the back there are wide ribbons, instead of tight-fitting silhouettes there are loose ones, in the spirit of the “Peasant Young Lady”. According to Natalia, she herself embroidered the gold brocade with large multi-colored crystals. Lena Tronina, Victoria Isakova and many others have already tried on her creation. The issue price is 43,000 rubles.

Warm dress pattern
A simple cut, but very warm and comfortable dress with a loose silhouette was created specifically for the cold season. The model is made of soft textured knitted fabric and has several non-standard details: counter pleats on the sleeves simulate volume, large patch pockets cut across create geometry, an original hem at the bottom edge adds lightness to the product. Spectacular buttons act as bright accents and give the model a complete look. And even if you're not a fan of short dresses, pairing this warm dress with tight skinny jeans, leggings or thick wool tights will make you feel comfortable in any situation. Pattern and master class on sewing a warm dress are in this lesson.
Dress pattern with a high slit
The quality of the material used for sewing is often the starting point when creating a product sketch. The density, elasticity coefficient and color of the material give rise to the outlines and silhouette lines of the future model in the designer’s imagination. For our next lesson, we created a model from dense, “heavy” synthetic jersey in a dark plum color, and when working on the model, it was the material that dictated the silhouette of the dress. The result is a product that can highlight all the advantages of a female figure!
Dress pattern with wide sleeves
Puffy voluminous sleeves are a very bright and feminine trend of the season. And since this style emphasizes the figure even more and makes it very graceful, girls are happy to follow the fashion trend and choose dresses with similar sleeves. A striking example of this is Celine Dion’s recent appearance at the Alexandre Vauthier show, where the singer appeared in a floor-length minidress with grotesque puffy sleeves. We do not suggest that you plunge headlong into bold experiments, but start with a sophisticated and feminine dress with an open shoulder line and voluminous sleeves.
Brocade dress for plus size people: what should you avoid?
The main challenge for full-figured women is to avoid full-length silhouettes. Slightly fitted models or straight silhouette styles help to add femininity to the image without disturbing the natural harmony.
Large breasts are a virtue that must be emphasized with properly selected clothing. This can be done using an empire line in a tunic or dress. The waist or abdomen area is the most problematic part of the body in obese women. That is why this zone must be smoothed out.
Tops, tunics or blouses of optimal length - up to the lower thigh.
The length of brocade jackets can be up to the beginning of the hip. Such a figure will not look bulky. Dresses and skirts should end at the knee - this is the narrowest point.
Pants can be different: classic models with an arrow up to the middle of the heel, or tapered ankle-length options. You should also not ignore wide dresses with maxi-length skirts.
Beach dress patterns
When preparing for vacation, it is better to think through your wardrobe in advance. Clothes should not only be bright, but also comfortable, and the fabrics from which you plan to sew yourself a beach dress or tunic should allow the skin to breathe and at the same time not form too many folds and creases on them when you take them off when you come to the beach. The ideal material for such clothing is undoubtedly cotton jersey. And today we offer you two luxurious models of beach dresses that you can sew without any pattern in just half an hour. All you need for this is a piece of material and a sewing machine.
Brocade: pros and cons
Any material has its own negative and positive qualities, and brocade is no exception. First, let's look at the Advantages of Fabric. The main advantages of brocade:
- Durable texture that does not require constant ironing;
- Brocade easily gathers into soft, beautiful folds that successfully hold their shape;
- The material can be easily combined with other fabrics, for example. lace or velvet;
- Brocade dresses do not require lining, since the original fabric base looks perfect without it;
- Aristocratic and at the same time not provocative appearance, making a brocade dress an invariable attribute of any evening cocktail;
- Clothes made of brocade do not wrinkle, and are comfortable at the same time. It has good breathability, hygroscopicity and thermoregulation.
- Due to the high density of the fabric, when sewing clothes from brocade, you don’t have to use a lining.
- Due to the addition of metal thread, the material looks spectacular without a sharp shine.
Returning to the disadvantages of brocade, you should pay attention to the following features of the material:
- The material is quite expensive - a dress made of natural brocade can cost a lot
- Difficult to care for - the fabric is quite finicky regarding ironing and washing
- Metallized fibers quickly deform and the fabric loses its color, taking on a worn-out appearance.
Dress pattern with drapery at the waist
When sewing products from plain fabrics, designers, in order to emphasize the properties and texture of the fabric, try to create complex and interesting styles, using a variety of modeling techniques in products - relief seams, hems, gathers, tucks... However, there is a simpler, but no less effective way to make This. The play of light and shadow in the folds and draperies of the soft peach knitted dress is unique and changes every time you move. In our today's lesson we will show you in detail how to model a dress pattern with draping at the waist.
Collection of prom dress patterns
Prom is one of the important events in the life of every girl, which is why a prom dress is chosen with special trepidation. After all, such an event happens only once in a lifetime, and on this day you want to be bright, elegant and unique. Modern trends dictate a new fashion for proms, but ball gowns retain the desire for elegant classic canons. In this article, we have put together for you a collection of fifteen sophisticated dresses that you can sew yourself, and in any of them you will make a real splash at the holiday!
Outerwear: classic chic natural brocade
When it comes to outerwear, most modern designers are inspired by the East. Brocade jackets, coats and stylish fashionable cardigans look especially elegant. The eternal desire of Russian fashionistas for luxurious and expensive clothes is reflected in the creations of Russian couturiers.
To avoid an excess of shine and high cost, which are quite overkill, it is necessary to choose strict and laconic models that will favorably set off the colors of the brocade itself. You can wear them with anything, but you need to choose subdued shoes and accessories for flashy brocade models.
