Pompoms are light and airy interior decorations in the shape of balls. They are not difficult to make, and the manufacturing costs are minimal, and the result is simply amazing.
DIY pompoms for a wedding
Making pompoms with your own hands is a creative process that promotes self-development and self-expression. Pompoms can be made from:
— paper (tissue, corrugated, crepe, etc.);
— fabrics (polyester, tulle, organza, etc.);
- non-woven fabric and other materials.

Pompoms can be hung like a garland or hung individually on threads from the ceiling, on tree branches, on crossbars and curtains. Pompom halves serve as a very cute decoration for the backs of chairs and fabric napkins on tables. Pompoms can be used to decorate a car, a veranda, or the entrance to a restaurant banquet hall.
How to make a paper pompom with your own hands
For this we need special paper, threads or thin wire, ribbon or threads for hanging, and scissors. If you are going to mount finished products on walls or horizontal surfaces, you will also need double-sided tape. You can use the following types of paper:
- corrugated;
- cigarette;
- crepe;
- silence;
- regular table napkins.
The first three options are best. So, you need to fold a sheet of paper like an accordion and carefully fasten it in the middle with threads or wire. Please note that it is not advisable to overtighten the accordion; the strip should remain straight. You can immediately attach a ribbon or thread to which you will attach the ball. Pom-poms made of corrugated paper (or any other) will have a diameter equal to the width of the sheet, this should be taken into account during manufacture. The edges can be trimmed figuratively: pointed or rounded. This will make the ball more beautiful and dense.
To begin with, you can make such blanks, and then begin to unfold them. Even children can cope with this task, but it requires some time and accuracy. You can also buy paper pompoms ready-made, that is, folded and fastened. All that remains is to open and hang such products.
How to decorate a hall with voluminous garlands
The point is this: you need to make three-dimensional figures from paper, which are then strung at some distance from each other on threads, fishing lines or thin ribbons. Such garlands hanging from the ceiling will greatly decorate a music or assembly hall.
Here is my example - pigeons in the clouds: I print out a diagram of a paper dove (by the way, you can print 20 more diagrams of different animals from here). For one garland we need two such birds. Cut out and fold along the folds, looking at the drawing in the right corner.
Print:
PIGEON
We will alternate pigeons with paper clouds like these. I don’t give you a diagram - we randomly cut out identical parts from 2 sheets of A4 format, bend them and fasten them in the center with a stapler. In a large figure, I cut out a small detail inside. This will also be a small cloud.
All! All that remains is to assemble our voluminous garland onto a string! I did this with a needle, securing the parts simply with a “step back” seam so that they would not roll down.
How do you like my pigeons in the clouds? By the way, these garlands spin very beautifully from any air movement. In the diagram the dove has legs, but we don't need it to stand on the table, I just made a curve at the bottom.
Instructions for unrolling a paper pompom
Next, both edges of the accordion need to be straightened like a fan. Having placed it on the table, you need to separate the top layer of paper and lift it up, bringing it to the attachment point. This should be done on both ends. You need to do the same with the second side, so that an equal number of layers are bent upward on both sides. You need to separate the layers of paper very carefully so that fewer tears are formed. But even if they are obtained, this is not critical, because they will not be noticeable in the general mass. Just fluff the resulting pompom well, shake it, and it’s ready. To be more confident, you can watch the training video.
Crepe paper pompoms come in a wide range of colors, allowing you to choose the right shade for your wedding. They are easy to make in a wide range of diameters. Of course, instead of special paper, you can use table napkins, but they do not hold their shape well and quickly deteriorate when water gets on them. To save time, you can order ready-made pom poms so you can simply unfold them before decorating your space.
You should select the colors of the pompoms for the wedding in advance. The combination of paper balls of different diameters, colors or shades, which dominate the overall design, looks very impressive.
Master class: buboes in the form of flowers
These soft, fluffy flower balls look unusual, and they are a little more difficult to make than simple one-color ones.
You can use leftover threads in bright colors. You will also need cardboard blanks shaped like horseshoes (4 pieces) and four metal stationery clips.
- It is necessary to visually divide the ornament into two parts from the center to the edges and in layers, sequentially wind yarn of different colors onto the templates.
- First - the middle of yellow.
- After - a wide layer of pink.
- Then a thin layer of green.
- Everything is covered with white strands
- Now we take the second pair of horseshoes and make another exactly the same blank.
- Using stationery clips we connect them to each other.
- Next, cut the yarn along the outer edge of the template.
- Tie the bubo across with a fixing thread.
- Carefully remove the cardboard.
- Fluff, trim.
Based on the techniques shown in this master class, you can make buboes in the form of other flowers, as well as fruits, vegetables, and berries.
DIY wedding decoration with paper pompoms
Decorating a wedding hall with pom-poms is a budget option that allows you to make the holiday bright, stylish, and original. To produce elements of such decor, you do not need to spend significant amounts of money or make great efforts. The bride and groom can make this decoration on their own, and if desired, ask friends for help.
- colored corrugated or crepe paper;
- scissors;
- wire;
- narrow satin ribbons.
The manufacturing process is quite simple, but requires care and attention. All operations are performed in a certain sequence.
Before you start decorating the hall or assembling garlands, you need to make as many blanks of different sizes as possible from paper of different colors.
When choosing paper colors for pompoms, it is important to remember that they should match the overall style of the wedding: for example, if the wedding is purple, then the color of the pompoms can be diluted with white.
Before starting work, you must:
- Give sheets of paper of the selected color the desired size. To do this, some of them are left in A4 format, while others are cut so as to obtain balls of a smaller diameter.
- Several sheets of the same size are folded like an accordion.
- Having identified and marked the middle of each workpiece, fasten it with metal wire.
- To give each pom-pom a special shape, the edges of the “accordion” are cut, rounding them or making them, on the contrary, pointed.
We can proceed to the most important thing. All the “petals” of the future pompom must be carefully and accurately straightened. First, half of the accordion is pulled apart like a fan.
Then carefully separate each layer of paper from one another. If everything is done correctly, you will get a figure that resembles a rattle. This is a hemisphere on a kind of leg. The other half of the accordion is straightened in the same way.
This way the workpiece will turn into a real fluffy ball.
The size of the pompom depends on the size of the sheet of corrugated paper used. The largest can be made using the full width of the roll, while the smallest are made in a size chosen by the craftsman.
The peculiarity of making large pompoms is that one fluffy ball takes almost 2 fleeces of paper.
A large pompom can be made from a small amount of paper, but to make small paper balls you need two or even three times as much paper. This should be taken into account when starting work on creating blanks.
Creating a ball of the correct shape requires preliminary preparation of sheets in the shape of a square, the length of the side of which corresponds to the diameter of the pompom. When making an accordion, you need to keep in mind that the size of the petal depends on the step size. And one more important point: by pulling the middle of the accordion strip with wire or tape, you cannot damage the integrity of the paper.
To create real masterpieces, folding sheets for a future accordion, use paper of different colors.
Large artificial flowers: decoration of an arch, photo zone, hall, walls
Depending on the theme of the celebration, the palette, size of bouquets and individual buds are chosen. This can be either an imitation of the inflorescences of real flowers or fantastic mixtures of different plants. It all depends on the desired effect; sometimes they even add jewelry, which is mounted as part of the flower.
Hall and walls
Often paper buds are installed on the walls of the hall; they look quite interesting on light surfaces.
But it is important to make separate islands of such decorations, and avoid continuous decoration. For compositions it is better to use flowers of different sizes and colors, and also preferably different shapes
But they all need to be slightly flattened to look organic on the walls. Most often they are placed in a random order, so as to create a feeling of naturalness, a “hedge”. Flat flowers can also be used to decorate the front of the bridal table.
If paper flowers are placed on the table, then it is necessary to create voluminous buds, similar in shape to real plants.
They are placed in vases with high legs so that they do not separate the guests and also do not block the view of the newlyweds. Compositions are most often made in a spherical shape, imitating real flowers or making one huge bud.
Photo zone and decor for a photo shoot
Photos for a wedding album are always an important part of memories, so during a photo shoot they try to create interesting poses and choose beautiful backgrounds.
There are several basic options for creating a backdrop for a photo zone. Types of decor:
- continuous covering of the wall with buds;
- design of a photo zone in the form of a frame of flowers;
- figured compositions on the walls, complemented by floor bouquets.
It doesn’t matter which design style is chosen, but in any case the buds should be very large and different in color or size from their neighbors. After all, the background should not merge into a monotonous canvas if the wedding decorations are based on a paper design
Arch
Decorating a wedding arch with paper flowers occurs in two main ways: pure, if the arch is decorated only with artificial buds, and mixed, when fabric curtains are additionally hung.
Ways to place buds:
- Symmetrical use of sizes and shades, suitable for semicircular arches at classical celebrations.
- Asymmetric placement of the palette, with uniform buds. This is done to create the effect of negligence.
- Asymmetrical placement of buds, with a uniform palette. Created to emphasize a certain area.
- Partial coverage of crossbars, good for square or complex shaped arches. Depending on the color and type of buds, they are suitable for both traditional and avant-garde celebrations.
When adding fabrics or ribbons, preference is given to light translucent textures, creating a feeling of airiness and flight.

Unexpected solutions to common crafts
Pompoms can be made not only from yarn, but also from paper (Christmas tree decorations), from sponges (part of a carnival costume - the nose of a mime clown), from garbage bags (those rustling plume balls) and so on.
Do-it-yourself fabric pompoms for a wedding
Fabric pompoms are very durable. They can be used more than once, decorating the interior if necessary, even after the wedding.

Materials for fabric pompoms:
- directly fabric (synthetic);
- ribbon or rope to hang the finished ball.
Manufacturing instructions:
Making this pompom ball is very easy. Lay the fabric out on the table and cut it into strips of equal width. The wider the strip, the larger the diameter of the finished pompom. We take the strip and tightly assemble it with an “accordion” onto a thread. We roll the stitched tape in a spiral so that we get half a ball. Fix the half of the ball with thread or glue. Sew a thread into the middle. Similarly, if necessary, we make the second half of the ball, fasten them with threads and hang them in the place you need.
Handbag
Using pom-poms, you can update an outdated clutch or textile bag that has scuffs or even holes. For decoration we use the same principle as when making rugs.
Don't have an old accessory? Sew a simple shaped bag with your own hands and complement it with original decor. Patterns can be made independently or borrowed from experienced needlewomen.
Little fashionistas will love original hair decorations and “jewelry” with fluffy balls.
Wedding pompoms made of fabric and Chinese lanterns
This is perhaps the most labor-intensive of all methods of creating interior decorative pom-pom balls.
For work we will prepare:
- Chinese lanterns in the shape of a ball;
- paper and pencil.

Manufacturing instructions
Cut out a circle from paper. It will serve as a template. The larger the diameter of the circle, the more magnificent the pompom will subsequently turn out. Place the circle on the fabric and trace it, then cut it out. Having prepared a sufficient number of fabric circles, we begin to work.
We take a Chinese lantern, a hot glue gun and one fabric circle. We fold the last one in four. Apply glue to the middle of the fabric and press it to the flashlight. We repeat the operation until the entire area of the base flashlight is hidden under the fabric.

Small decorative pompoms for decorating holiday dishes can be made from strips of non-woven fabric or tulle of small width. To do this, it is enough to assemble the strip on a thread (we make a seam in the center of the strip, along), if necessary, fasten several pieces together. Glue the ball onto a wooden skewer and decorate dishes or a flower arrangement in a vase.
