For the minimalist wardrobe savvy, a blue suit is all you need. Those two pieces you're getting married in can have some smart design flair, and can also be used for job interviews, outings around the city, and smart casual date nights.
Why is a blue suit more versatile than others? It's not as edgy as a black suit or as dark as a gray one. It flatters all skin tones and matches almost every color on the color wheel.
More importantly, depending on the style, the blue suit is a chameleon. It absorbs the properties of what it is worn with, projecting different versions of the person wearing it: you can be fashionable, corporate and casual at the same time.
The ideal shade is deep blue, but not too dark: aim for something a few notches higher than navy. Avoid shine and look for a light texture - medium-weight wool is ideal. Once you have it in your hands, or rather on you, you will be amazed at how many things from your wardrobe go perfectly with it. Starting with these 12 outfits...
Blue suit + blue shirt + dark blue tie
Every office has a guy who wears a suit like a real boss. (Ironically, he's rarely the real boss.) Without access to top-secret information or a personal stylist, this men's clothing messiah simply knows the easiest ways to look good—like dressing in shades of color that leave no question about how to dress in the morning. .
Wear a light blue dress shirt under your navy suit, tie it with a navy tie, and complete the look with a pair of black derbies or loafers. Congratulations, you are now that guy.
Trendy styles
The style depends on the situation, but there are general trends that should be followed. The main detail is the bottom of the set - trousers or a skirt. The current trend is for high-waisted trousers. The emphasis is on the criteria for the length and width of trousers, changing which fashion designers suggest wearing culottes and palazzos, flares and bananas, pipes and riding breeches.
Fashionable culottes are shortened wide trousers. The model does not restrict movement and can be combined with heeled shoes. However, not every woman can wear such a product, since the cut visually increases the volume of the hips, adding extra pounds.
Palazzo pants are a kind of long culottes, the style is also wide, but floor-length. The model is suitable for both slender girls, emphasizing the waistline, and those who want to hide imperfections in the legs and hips. In this case, light and draping fabrics are chosen.
Flared trousers come in many variations, flaring out from the hip, knee or below. The cut is considered trendy, so it is appropriate in any situation.
Breeches and banana trousers, on the contrary, are distinguished by a narrowing towards the bottom, which places emphasis on the hips. The style looks good both in the office and on a date. A stylish solution is shortened bananas, which are worn with shoes or flats.
Classic straight trousers never go out of style. The 7/8 length, arrows or the presence of a belt made of suiting fabric will allow you to make the look more modern.
Trendy styles of skirts include different types of midis, ruffles, wrap skirts, asymmetry, and the use of different textures. Products of medium length and a tight cut are complemented with lace, as an evening option. Circle skirts will complement your everyday look. The ruffled midi skirt, which is complemented with tube boots, ankle boots, and sneakers, is popular among fashionistas.
Wrap skirts have an A-line silhouette and are suitable for young girls who want to highlight their legs. Asymmetry and different textures complement fashionable pieces.
The main trend for the upper part of the suit is loose and elongated styles. A wide, non-fitted jacket, reminiscent of a men's jacket, remains popular. Double-breasted models with a classic collar, straight shoulders and wrist-length sleeves are in fashion. Forget about cropped styles with 3⁄4 sleeves.
Buttons are used as decorative decorations: in the color of the suit, contrasting or metallized. The jacket is worn open, but if you want to emphasize femininity, choose a strap. Belts with an animal print or made of suiting fabric with a color-matched buckle look stylish.
Maintain proportionality so that the set looks harmonious. The style of the top is chosen based on the bottom of the suit. So, if the choice fell on wide trousers, the jacket should be slightly fitted and, conversely, a loose or straight top is in harmony with narrow trousers.
Blue suit + Breton top
Tailoring has long had the symbolic status of tailoring the working man's uniform. Outside the boardroom, few spent time as sailors—especially French sailors in Brittany in the 1850s—making the Breton top a worthy companion to naval suit.
Choose a base color T-shirt with the traditional 21 stripes (each representing one of Napoleon's victories), pair with a pair of minimalist sneakers, and ditch any other nautical-themed men's clothing (such as a pea coat or neckerchief) to avoid swimming in waters of misunderstanding.
Blue suit + contrast top
There are a limited number of rules when it comes to wearing a suit. Of course, it has to fit perfectly, be buttoned correctly and have the right fabric for the season, but when it comes to style, almost anything goes with it. This includes adding a coveted color to a navy suit in the form of a contrasting T-shirt or knit.
While blue isn't technically a neutral, it works with almost any shade on the color wheel. Try variations of yellow, green and purple depending on the season (mustard, khaki and wine, for example, work best in winter) and keep the rest of the look simple.
Jacket materials
Men who prefer a classic clothing style should choose wool as a material. There is a wide variety of fabrics for making jackets, among which you can find an option for any time of year. When sewing men's blue jackets, light materials are used for summer, and denser ones for winter.
Wool has better breathability than other fabrics and retains body heat better.
There are mixed types of material, when elastic synthetic threads are added to natural fibers. The result is an elastic fabric that can fit the figure. Suits are made from it for young people, as well as for sporty men and lovers of urban style.
Mixed materials are often used when sewing modern jackets. These include clothing made from cashmere and knitwear, cotton and silk with the addition of linen fibers.
Blue suit + crew neck jersey
It's easier than business casual outfits. Crewneck jersey softens your look and allows you to play with color in a way that a regular shirt wouldn't. Plain merino can add an edgy feel to things, but you can also add subtle texture or knit for added texture.
Neutral colors like gray and cream work well, but you can also try something bolder like sage green or burnt orange in the middle. Wear a neutral t-shirt or oxford shirt underneath in case you lose the office thermostat battle.
The right fabric for a shirt
When choosing a shirt for a suit, you can’t stop at knitwear or synthetics! Fabric made from artificial threads looks too cheap and unworthy of the high classic style. A knitted shirt will look completely ridiculous with a classic suit.
The “correct” shirt for a suit is made only from natural high-quality cotton. Linen or silk content is allowed.
The material from which the suit shirt is made must be 100% natural. A very small percentage of synthetic fibers is allowed (no more than 5%). Thanks to these impurities, the shirt will wrinkle much less during wear.
The weaving of the fibers should be smooth, dense, and fine-mesh. For men's shirts, certain types of thread weaving are specially used, which form a smooth fabric structure. These are poplin, cotton twill, heringbone.
For each suit, it is advisable to choose at least 3 shirts that will fit perfectly with it. And one more recommendation: to look your best, you need to buy very high-quality, ideally expensive, shirts. Cheap fabric greatly spoils the appearance of the entire ensemble and cheapens the appearance of the suit.
Blue suit + Cuban collar shirt
Wildly popular in recent summers, a Cuban collar shirt will add a positive vibe to your outfit (even if you work for an insurance company). This type of shirt often features bold patterns, but we recommend keeping the color palette as neutral as possible, especially if you plan to wear it to work.
Go for blue or off-white, tucked in if possible. When you put on your jacket, the shag collar of your shirt will compete with your lapels, so tuck it in so you don't have to adjust it every 20 minutes.
Basic selection rules
When we first mention the word “tie,” the first association we have is a classic suit, which is weakly affected by fashion trends and is not particularly affected by unimportant details. It is impossible to imagine a business suit without this accessory; without it, the image seems incomplete. A correctly chosen tie will emphasize masculine dignity, and in order not to make mistakes, you should take into account the basic rules, taking into account color, fabric and size. For a win-win choice, you should follow 3 key rules.
- Color design plays one of the key roles. Today the color palette is represented by thousands of shades. The classic option is a light jacket, a dark shirt and a plain tie without a pattern. Printed accessories deserve special attention. The main thing is that each element of clothing does not conflict with the others. It is advisable to choose patterns that are similar, but with slight differences.
- A man's figure affects his size. Large men should purchase an accessory that is long and wide. The main thing to remember is that the bottom of the tie should be level with the top edge of the belt or slightly higher. The standard width is 7.5-9.5 cm, it can also be made to order.
Do not forget about convenience - a tie should not cause discomfort.
Blue suit + Henley shirt
The shirt tells you how far the clothing has come, and now you can safely tuck any clothes under your jacket without looking. Most often worn with knits these days, the Henley shirt is more than capable of elevating the look.
It's basically a collarless polo shirt, so it adds a touch of casualness to your blue suit. Just make sure there are no ketchup stains from a wild night of fun.
Blue suit + striped banker shirt
If you have a meeting in town, your blue suit will be more than corporate. Still associated with 1980s office bankers, the blue and white striped banker's shirt still means business in every possible way.
You can play it down with less formal shoes or ditch the tie, but for the full greedy effect, add a Windsor knot, a parted hairstyle and horn-rimmed glasses.
Blue three-piece suit + white shirt + patterned tie
In most cases, a three-piece suit can be confusing to use unless you are competing at a dinner party with tuxedos. It's so formal and it's probably the addition of a vest that literally adds an extra level of formality to your outfit.
We're assuming you're not a football manager, so only use it for cold winter weddings and the most run-of-the-mill boardrooms, and don't bother with it again. Keep your shirt white, tie dark, shoes shiny.
From cold to warm
Blue color has the unique ability to add coldness to any shade adjacent to it. However, it is possible to distinguish tones that emit a weak, almost intangible warmth, and others that only real Snow Queens should have in their wardrobe.
Such colors of the spectrum as yellow and May green will add warmth to blue. Interventions of purple and cool greens will keep it cool. Although, specifically in relation to blue, this division into degrees is extremely arbitrary.
Blue suit + matching shirt
Although this combination was once considered boring and lacking in creativity, tonal clothing is one of the easiest ways to add elegance to your suit. For a more formal look, wear a simple navy blue cotton shirt in a suit-like shade to complete the look.
This combination, ideal for business occasions or office dress codes, has a gangster villain scent that's perfect for a trip to a posh cocktail bar after 9:30 pm.
Blue suit + black T-shirt
Contrary to popular belief, blue and black can and should be worn together. After all, black shoes have long been acceptable to wear with blue tailoring, so why not extend the color combination to other items of clothing?
A black tee is the perfect complement to a navy suit, especially when paired with black derbies or boots. These two pieces will complement each other and instantly transform your look.
Blue suit + white shirt + gray tie
Classic business look. A carefree navy suit paired with a crisp white shirt and a medium to light gray tie will create a carefree office look. It's important to pay attention to the details here - the knot of the tie, the placement of the pocket square and how the suit fits - all this is very important for the final combination.
It's worth noting that business office attire can quickly deteriorate if you don't have proper care habits. If you want to look really good, you need a creative haircut, shave or beard, well-groomed skin and neat short nails. There's no point in dressing like that if you don't look good.
What would you recommend?
Now we have four ways to wear a blue or even gray printed suit. What do you think of them? Is it worth buying things that are not boring at all, is it worth standing out from the crowd with their help - or, perhaps, is it better to pay tribute to timeless classics without prints and sartorial sophistication, which will be appropriate “for both a wedding and a funeral”?
- Maybe you also have a similar suit, and you are already looking impatiently at the door of your own closet to try to combine it with what else is there, and if not, then there will definitely be one soon?
- Or do you currently only have a standard gray suit, but are you already thinking about purchasing something more daring, since you realized that a large check is far from the scope of one single image?
- Or (even better) can you offer your own ideas on how to wear a men’s suit correctly and not boringly? Although, of course, we are not in Italy, and not everyone has a white suit - but there is definitely a classic summer sand or gray suit. How do you wear them?
