How much does a wedding in the Orthodox Church cost and what is needed for it?

An important Orthodox wedding rite is a real church sacrament, signifying the union of two loving souls forever. The process is beautiful in itself, as it is carried out in ancient churches with a large number of icons, Christian paintings and prayer chants. It is necessary for every Orthodox couple getting married. After all, only baptized bride and groom who have undergone an interview with a confessor and the necessary preparation: fasting and communion are allowed to perform the sacrament. Like any temple requirement, the ritual is paid for. So, how much does a church wedding cost in different cities of Russia and what might this amount depend on?

How much does it cost to get married in a church in Moscow and the region?

You can get married in churches in the capital for either 500 rubles or 50,000.

  1. In the Church of Clement on Pyatnitskaya, the ritual is performed exclusively on Sundays after the end of the liturgy. The temple is distinguished by the splendor of both its external and internal decoration and architecture. The secret action is carried out only for one couple. Young people just need to bring icons and rings with them, and everything else - the choir, the work of bell ringers, candles, handkerchiefs for them, towels, etc. - is included in the price. But its size can be shocking - 50,000 rubles.
  2. The Cathedral of the Great Ascension on Nikitskaya is famous for the fact that the wedding of Pushkin and Goncharova took place there. The very cozy, bright interior in the Empire style attracts the attention of couples who want to perform the ceremony. The donation will be about 5,000 rubles, but you need to pay extra for the choir, decoration with flowers, etc.
  3. In the Museum-Church of St. Nicholas on Maly Tolmachevsky Lane, the opportunity to get married will cost at least 4,000 rubles. The participation of a deacon or altar boy is paid additionally. The entrance to the church passes through the Tretyakov Gallery, where great works of art are preserved, in particular the Miraculous Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.
  4. Weddings are not held in the capital’s most important Cathedral of Christ the Savior on Volkhonka. They are held in the Church of the Transfiguration, which is part of the complex. A donation costs from 10,000 rubles. Choir accompaniment is not paid separately. On Saturdays at 9:00 am there are meetings with the minister for registration and consultation.
  5. The Temple of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, located in the Kolomenskoye reserve-museum, was created in the 17th century. The monument of architecture and Orthodox art holds services and services, including weddings. Registration and conversation with the minister are scheduled for 13:50 every Sunday and Saturday. The cost is from 12,000 rubles, of which a deposit of 5,000 is accepted. The rest is paid on the day of the wedding in the church. In Kolomenskoye it is allowed to take photos and videos. Despite the fact that there is a huge queue of people wanting to get married here, the sacrament is performed with each couple separately.
  6. The Izmailovo Church of the Nativity, part of the Eastern District of the capital, provides the opportunity for those wishing to get married for an average of 1,500 rubles.
  7. But not all parishes set a fixed price for a wedding. There are temples where each couple makes a voluntary donation in an amount determined by the heroes of the occasion:
  • in the Northern District of Moscow in the Church of Boris and Gleb on Deguninskaya Street;
  • in the Southern District - Church of the Transfiguration in Novokuznetsky Lane, etc.

So, how much a wedding costs in the churches of the capital depends on the established fixed amount in each institution.

What does the price depend on?

In addition to the fact that you pay for the sacrament itself, you must also take into account the costs of the mandatory attributes of the celebration, which are necessary.

Necessary attributes mean:

  • A pectoral cross is a must for any Christian. If the spouses are baptized and already wear crosses, then there is no need to buy them additionally. In cases where a purchase is necessary, the price averages from 300 and can reach 100,000 rubles .
  • Rings - again, if the spouses for some reason do not have them. According to tradition, husband and wife should have rings made of different metals. As a rule, the groom acquires a gold ring as a sign of the sun, Jesus Christ, a sign of the beginning of the family hearth. The bride acquires a silver ring, a symbol of the moon, the feminine principle. Rings do not have to be bought in a church shop; they can be purchased at any jewelry store; their price tag starts from approximately 1,500 rubles .
  • Cushion for rings - their price ranges from 300-1000 rubles .
  • Wedding candles - average cost from 350-1500 rubles .
  • Wedding icons - icons of Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary are purchased. The priest blesses the bride and groom with them during the ceremony. The cost of the simplest icons is about 1,500 rubles .
  • A towel is a fabric used for the bride and groom to stand on it in front of the priest at the time of the sacrament. It is also necessary for the bride and groom to hold the icons afterwards. The price of a towel ranges from 400 to 2000 rubles .
  • Red wine is usually Cahors or sherry. The priest gives the bride and groom a drink during the sacrament. The cost of one bottle starts from 700 – 1000 rubles.
  • A scarf for the bride - in the absence of a veil. It should be in a light shade. The price varies from 350-1500 rubles .
  • Handkerchiefs are usually light-colored, preferably white, decorated with embroidery. Handkerchiefs are used to hold candles during the ceremony, as the wax from them will drip onto your hands. It is important that the newlyweds are not distracted by anything. They are also used to ensure that the newlyweds' witnesses hold the crown over them. Crowns (crowns) at the moment of wedding symbolize the Kingdom of Heaven. The price starts from 100 rubles and can reach about 800 rubles .

That is, in addition to paying for the sacrament itself, the amount of the so-called “wedding set” is also added. A separate, very important point is the attire of the bride and groom. Revealing, short outfits are not allowed. It is important to emphasize the modesty of the spouses, rather than some kind of emancipation.

Wedding dress - how to choose?

On a note. The wedding dress can be any color. Traditional white has European echoes. There, white color is a symbol of purity and innocence.

At an Orthodox Russian wedding since ancient times, the traditional dress has been a red sundress.

What important points should a bride take into account when choosing a wedding dress?

  • Covered shoulders and arms (at least to the elbow)
  • Closed neckline
  • Covered back
  • Length reaching to toes

If the design of the dress is open, you should think about capes. The cost of a wedding dress depends only on your personal preferences.

How to prepare for the ceremony

You need to prepare for the ceremony in church in advance.
First of all, you should choose a temple. If the future spouses are not parishioners of a particular Orthodox institution, then they are advised to go to the cathedral that bears the names of the patrons of married life, or to the temple of the saint whose name the bride or groom bears. It is important to take into account the capacity of the cathedral in terms of the number of guests, the possibility of parking ceremonial vehicles, holding a photo shoot, distance from the banquet venue, etc.

You should decide on the day on which you would like to hold the celebration. It is recommended to do this as early as possible, since queues for some temples last up to six months. The Orthodox calendar marks the days when it is better to get married. The ritual is not performed:

  • on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays;
  • on the eve of Epiphany, Christmas and other great holidays;
  • during the period of fasting;
  • on Christmastide and Great Weeks: cheese, Easter.

The church minister will help you decide on the place and day of the wedding during the interview.

Who doesn't get married

There are a number of cases when a priest cannot bless a union. Firstly, if this is the fourth or fifth marriage for at least one of the spouses. Secondly, relatives are not married - even if they are second cousins. In addition, the church prohibits performing the sacrament if at least one of the newlyweds considers himself an atheist. And finally, you cannot get married if at least one of the spouses is not baptized.

Since foreigners are allowed to get married in St. Petersburg, Georgy Romanov and his Italian lover Rebecca Bettarini agreed on the ceremony directly with the temple. The only condition for foreign citizens in such cases is adherence to the Orthodox faith, to which Rebecca recently converted. NEVSKIE NEWS studied the biography and interests of the bride of a Romanov descendant.

The 17th-century temple is located in the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve. You can come for a conversation with the priest on Saturday or Sunday, starting at 13:50. The amount is paid in two parts: first, a deposit of 5 thousand rubles, the rest - on the wedding day. Photography is permitted during the sacrament.

Now there is quite a long queue in the temple - this happens after the end of Lent, but couples still get married separately from each other.

Wedding cost

The price of the ceremony in Russia varies within 10 thousand rubles, depending on the grandeur of the venue.

What's included in the price

Payment for the marriage ceremony is a charitable contribution to the needs of the temple. Its size is set by the leadership of the church.

How is the price for a sacrament determined?

The money donated for the priest to conduct the ceremonies is used to maintain the church in a decent form and spread the ideas of Orthodoxy. They are spent:

  • for repairs;
  • payment of utility bills;
  • for the salary of clergy, church choristers, bell ringers and people who clean the temple premises and the adjacent area;
  • for Sunday school work.

The more magnificent the cathedral, the more funds are needed for its maintenance. This fact is fundamental to the couple’s choice of location for the sacrament and makes the donation amount higher. You should first ask the priest how much should be paid for the ceremony. If he answers that there is no need to pay, you need to donate 1000-3000 rubles.
