Choosing a scarf for a wedding: advice from stylists and instructions on how to sew it yourself

The bride's scarf is considered the most canonical and strict addition to the main wedding dress. A veil is an analogue of a scarf, but it is worth remembering that since ancient times it could only be used by innocent persons. And if we take into account the fact that marriage registration occurs after a secular procedure, a veil is often out of the question. Many note that scarves have their own special appeal and add chastity to the image, unlike a veil. Which is an important proof of the sacredness of the wedding ritual.

Features of the wedding

Getting married in a church is quite a serious step. Before deciding on it, you need to prepare well; here are some recommendations to avoid mistakes and subsequently regret what you did:

Married couples who decide to marry in a church should clearly understand that a church marriage or wedding is a union for life. According to the laws of the church, “debunking” does not exist. And in order to destroy this vow in the face of God, one must have compelling reasons that will be considered by more than one church authority.

To enter into a wedding union, a man and a woman must be baptized according to Orthodox canons and customs. In the Catholic Church, it is enough for one of the couple to be a Catholic, the other can belong to any other Orthodox denomination.

Before contacting a clergyman, the couple must be registered with a state registry office.

Before entering into a church marriage, the newlyweds receive a blessing from the priest and undergo spiritual training, according to church rules.

Useful tips

An accessory such as a pasha scarf allows you to make a man’s outfit more formal or gives it a bright accent. Therefore, it is imperative to choose the right color design, fabric and folding method so that this element is appropriate for a particular event.

When choosing a pasha, it is important to compare its size with the width and depth of the jacket pocket, and also try to fold it in different ways so that after purchase there are no problems in terms of styling it.

Pasha made of linen and cotton fabric must be ironed before laying. You can additionally starch the product so that the curves remain even. But it is strictly not recommended to iron silk models, much less starch them, as this will lead to damage.

When folding a scarf into a pocket, it should not protrude beyond the edge by more than 2 cm, otherwise it will bend.

If the depth of the pocket exceeds the size of the pasha, then you can put a small piece of thin fabric. This will prevent the accessory from rolling deeper. Also, special metal clamps can be used for fixation.

Wedding scarf: what is it?

A wedding ceremony, what could be more beautiful and wonderful in the life of a newlywed. The bride, in her airy dress with a lace cape, is tender and mysterious. The wedding scarf on the newlywed's head emphasizes the solemnity of the moment and highlights her beauty.

Nowadays, as in ancient times, great importance is attached to the wedding headdress. It symbolizes the bride's modesty, innocence and femininity. Why a scarf and not a veil during a wedding, you ask. But because, according to Orthodox law, the bride’s head must be completely covered, the veil does not comply with these Orthodox traditions.

Ritual of removing the veil and scarf

The wedding day was considered the last day of a girl's girlhood. Ancestors in a number of regions endowed the day with a special, magical meaning. For example, scarves served as symbols of a woman’s difficult lot, while a veil, on the contrary, spoke of a holiday and a good mood. Modern traditions have undergone changes, and this interpretation should not be taken literally. Because in modern families, for the most part, equality reigns. Today, it is only important to consider the importance of choosing the color of the scarf, which, ideally, should be white.

A new scarf that matches the dress can give the bride confidence in her abilities and happiness in the family. But in the modern world, many couples forget about the traditions that were inherited from their ancestors. Some even refuse to have a wedding ceremony at all. Some for religious reasons, while others do not want to evoke sad emotions on such an important day. It is worth remembering that sadness in this case is a sincere and necessary emotion, however, it is appropriate in moderation at such a bright event. Priests recommend not carrying out the wedding ritual for a long time and leaving time for it at the very end of the ceremony. It is worth ending the sacrament on a cheerful note so that the guests leave in high spirits.

Who can remove the bride's veil

The traditional ceremony of removing the veil from the bride’s head has three possible scenarios:

  • The most common option is the removal of the veil from the bride's head by the mother-in-law, the mother of the groom. In a ritual, the mother-in-law accepts the bride into her family and agrees to be her mentor;
  • The ceremony of removing the veil by the mother of the bride has its own nuances. She must try to perform the ritual three times. And the bride must wave it off 3 times, in a feigned manner. In the end, the girl must agree and after removing the veil, her husband puts the scarf on her. This action symbolizes the bride's transition from childhood to adulthood. And the mother hands her daughter into the hands of her husband, while giving a blessing to the young family;
  • the third option allows the groom to remove the veil himself. Despite the fact that this scenario is more modern, it does not lose its significance. The husband must remove one pin from the girl’s hair, accompanying each action with compliments. When the veil is finally removed, the husband puts a scarf on his head, as if accepting the girl into his family and adult life.

Anyone can wear a bridal scarf; the ritual and significance of this celebration for the marriage ceremony will not change. It is important that the influence of modern traditions had virtually no influence on the details of the ceremony, which makes the wedding a truly unique and mysterious rite.

A little about the bride's wedding dress

The color of the wedding dress should be light tones. White color - a symbol of innocence and purity, came to us from Europe. Our ancestors walked down the aisle in dresses of different colors. But there were also established rules: you couldn’t wear colorful and bright dresses, as well as gloomy black, dark brown and poisonous purple shades. The rest of the delicate tones of any color are quite appropriate for this event.

According to the rules, the length of the wedding dress should be below the knees. For the wedding process, the dress can be of any style, but as closed as possible. An outfit with long sleeves, a closed back and a shallow neckline would look ideal. The sleeve style is allowed and shortened, to the elbow, for example. But the back, chest and shoulders must be completely covered and there are no deviations here.

A wedding scarf is a fascinating and integral part of a wedding dress. According to Orthodox traditions, a girl’s head should be completely covered by a headdress. As we have already said, it could be a veil, but we will now name three good reasons why the choice should fall on a wedding scarf.

Reason #1

The beauty of a wedding accessory. The headdress is made of lace, light and delicate fabric. Thanks to this, the fabric smoothly falls on the shoulders of the newlywed, forming neat folds. A scarf accessory will add mystery and enigma to the image, as well as an aura of spirituality.

Reason #2

An original headdress in the form of a wedding scarf will highlight the image of the bride, unlike other newlyweds whose heads are covered from behind by a veil. During the wedding, the girl’s face should be open, this is another plus to the fact that a scarf allows you to do this, but a veil does not always. If the bride's dress still has slight frivolities, then shawl fabric will successfully cover up this defect; a veil, due to its transparency and volatility, will not be able to do this.

Reason #3

The wedding scarf allows you to comply with all church rules and traditions, while it does not overshadow the beauty of the bride, but rather emphasizes it favorably. It doesn’t fall off your head when you bow, which is very convenient; you don’t have to constantly twitch and adjust the material that has moved onto your forehead or completely covered your face.

The arguments are given, the choice is yours. Keep in mind, whatever headgear you choose, it should always completely cover your head, and your face should be as open as possible.

Bride's hair decoration

If headdresses are not suitable for you, you can use other decorations for the bride's hair for the wedding. These can be all kinds of tiaras, tics, hairpins, hairpins , etc.

The decoration is selected depending on the hairstyle and image of the bride

The style of accessories should match the dress, shoes, bouquet and boutonniere. The goal is to create a harmonious final image. We'll tell you what you can use for this.

Diadem

A wedding tiara for a bride is especially suitable for those with luxurious hair . This option will look harmonious with almost any dress. Another type of tiara is a wedding crown.

It is important to understand that this accessory is part of the hairstyle . He brings majesty and solemnity to the image. However, when using a tiara, it is important not to overdo it with the amount of other jewelry.

Crest

If the bride collects her hair in a high hairstyle or in a bun , then the wedding comb will look very beautiful and elegant. Typically, such a hairpin is located in the center of the composition and secures it. If the comb has an unusual shape, it can be attached to the side.

You can use a comb to attach the veil to your hair. Combs in the form of a twig in the hair, decorated with sparkling stones, look unusual. It is important that the rhinestones on the comb match the bride's jewelry.

Hoops and headbands

For young brides, hoops or headbands with wedding flowers for loose hair are suitable. They can be live or artificial. Such options look so elegant that they can compete with wreaths.

For a lush and voluminous hairstyle , hoops with large decorative elements are suitable. If your hair is thin and straight, it is better to opt for a narrow headband with small stones and rhinestones.

Hairpins made of flowers

An elegant hairpin made of fresh flowers for the bride will look harmonious in a delicate wedding look. The accessory will highlight the natural beauty of the newlywed. When creating a hairpin, you can use a single bud or a composition of floral elements. A large bud perfectly complements lush curls, but combinations of small flowers are more appropriate to use on complex hairstyles.

Tika

Tika is the name given to a forehead decoration for a bride. It is widely used in India, but has recently become popular in European countries as well. A wedding tika on the head is a pendant that is held on thin chains . One of the chains is located along the parting, the other two - on the sides.

Hairpins with stones or flowers

The bride's original hairstyle can be decorated in an unusual and bright way with hairpins . Each bridal hair clip uses a variety of decorative elements at the top. These can be precious and semi-precious stones or flowers.

Hairpins are used to secure the hairstyle in the desired direction, shape the style and focus attention on the details. The result is an original hairstyle , decorated with elegant elements.

Types of scarves for weddings

The choice of style of wedding scarf depends on individual preferences and taste, as well as on the style and cut of the wedding dress.

For those who are fitted and elegant, as well as those with a deep neckline and off-the-shoulder look, a ballerina-style wedding headpiece with a hood, button closure and lace sleeves is ideal. This cape will complement and complete the bride’s wedding look.

If the upper part of the wedding dress is decorated with embroidery, flowers or beads, then it is better to choose a headdress that is completely closed or with one button.

For romantic brides, a long coat is suitable. For modest and laconic newlyweds, a scarf with a drawstring and satin ties is suitable.

Where did it come from?

The ritual associated with removing the veil has a very ancient history, which goes deep into the past, but has survived to this day.

However, this tradition is observed most of all in Ukraine and Belarus, and in Russia this tradition is not so widespread; it can not be found often in wedding scenarios.

A young girl usually weaves braids and wreaths on her head. The ritual began with the wreath being removed from the girl’s head, which is a symbol of the young woman’s freedom.

Then the bride's braided braids were unraveled, which attracted the opposite sex to the girl. A scarf was tied on the head, since it was indecent for a married woman to walk without a head covering.

This ceremony had a special sacrament and meant that the bride had already become a married woman, she was beginning a new life under the wing of her husband.

In the old days, it was believed that before the wedding the bride seemed to die, before the marriage she cried long and loudly, did not want to get married, but then she was “reborn” and moved to a new stage of her long life, next to her husband.

This attribute meant dividing the girl’s life into “before” and “after”, because the young woman begins a completely new life.

If a girl’s head is covered with a veil, this means that she is still a bride; if she is young and already has a scarf tied, the girl has become a married woman.

DIY wedding scarf

To make a wedding scarf with your own hands, you usually take the following types of fabrics:

  • Guipure;
  • Scalloped lace fabric;
  • Atlas;
  • Silk.

If the fabric is simple, then it is trimmed with lace, which also looks very beautiful. In our master class we will show you how to sew a scarf with a drawstring and guipure ties with your own hands.

In our master class we will tell you in detail how to sew a wedding scarf using lace fabric, in particular guipure.

What you need for work:

  • Guipure – with a width of 140 cm, 1 m;
  • Lace – 3.5 m;
  • Bias binding to match the guipure – 1.6 m;
  • Satin ribbon (thin) – 1.5 m;
  • Beads for finishing the ends of the ribbon - 2 pieces;
  • Scissors;
  • Sewing machine.

Step-by-step description of the work:

Fold a piece of prepared fabric in half lengthwise and cut into two parts.

We take one strip and fold it into two in width.

Cut off one bottom corner as shown in the diagram below.

Mark where the part for tying the fabric (drawstring) will go.

The photo shows how to correctly cut the corner of the fabric.

Sew around the perimeter of the cut fabric with lace and sew a drawstring at the marked place.

This is such a beautiful thing that comes out in the end. Warning, it is better to use a double needle for the machine; it will be more convenient for sewing elastic fabrics, such as guipure and lace.

Cut off the lace at the corners and sew it overlapping with a zigzag. Carefully cut off excess fabric.

Now you need to sew on the drawstring. It can be placed both from the outside and from the wrong side, this is at personal discretion.

In our MK the drawstring is sewn on the front side.

We take a satin ribbon and use a pin to thread it into the drawstring.

We decorate the ends of the ribbon with beads or ends. See photo.

How to choose a scarf for a jacket

A jacket scarf, or so-called pache scarf, is significantly different from one intended for hygienic purposes. Firstly, it must be made from natural fabrics. You can give preference to silk, cotton, linen or even wool. Various combinations of these materials are also possible. But it is not recommended to purchase artificial fiber products. This scarf looks cheap and loses its attractive appearance over time.

Secondly, it is slightly smaller in size than a standard handkerchief. Indeed, in this case, the pasha is chosen taking into account the parameters of the breast pocket of the jacket. If we talk about the optimal size, then for a silk product it is 37*37 cm (up to 45*45 cm is allowed). But it is better to choose smaller items made from linen and wool; in some cases, 33*33 cm will be enough. It is also worth considering that the larger the pocket square, the more interesting it can be folded.

Attention! A pocket square that is too small will gradually sink into the pocket, thereby losing its elegance.

Shawls for church weddings

Wedding scarves can be purchased ready-made in stores, and if you are talented and know how to sew, you can make it yourself. In this case, exclusivity and uniqueness are guaranteed. But what do you still need to know before purchasing a finished item:

  • If the wedding dress has lace trim, then you need to choose a lace scarf with the same exact pattern, otherwise there will be dissonance in the outfit. In this case, it is recommended to choose a wedding headdress made of smooth fabric and minimal trim. Choosing a lace cape, the image will be gentle and mysterious, and it will complete the image of the bride.
  • For a white wedding dress, a strictly white cape is chosen, without shades or tones. Otherwise, it appears that the item is dirty.
  • In order for the ceremony to take place without problems and complications, the scarf on the head should be secured with hairpins or bobby pins.
  • In the winter season, a wedding headdress trimmed with fur will look chic. In addition to its luxurious appearance, it will also reliably protect against frost and wind.
  • More daring brides, in order to be remembered for a long time, take an extravagant step. Purchase a wedding cape in a bright, contrasting color. But this option is not suitable for everyone.
  • In order to avoid unnecessary fuss and hassle with putting on a scarf on a special day, you need to practice fixing it on your head in advance. In this case, a cape with a hood and drawstrings, which do not require special attention and will not let you down at the most crucial moment, helps out well.

Tips for choosing a head covering

Idea! For a winter look, a fur edging on the cloak or bonnet is possible, but remember that it is usually quite hot in the church.

  • If you choose a lace scarf, then it is better to choose a dress that is smooth or has a similar pattern. Different openwork weaving will destroy the integrity of the image;
  • Think about how exactly you will attach the scarf to your hair - bobby pins, hairpins, combs, ribbons. An accessory that comes off during the ceremony will cause inconvenience and spoil the mood;
  • If you choose white or its shades, then try to match it tone on tone with the dress. A darker item looks untidy;
  • A colored scarf would also work well. It will add the necessary zest to your look, the main thing is that the shade is light and not too bright.
