Traditions, customs and rituals of the first wedding night in different countries of the world.

First wedding night: association - beautiful sex between the bride and groom. Everything is romantic and airy. Right? Very! But exclusively for representatives of Western civilization. Having analyzed the traditions of the first wedding night in different countries and times, we can come to the conclusion that guests and a feast can be considered a mandatory attribute at weddings and on the first night. Everything else is optional, including the bride and groom. And even more so sex.

European culture has developed some peculiarities of sex on the wedding night. But everything is in order.

The first wedding night in the Middle Ages

It all started a long time ago. It is well known that in dark times overlords of various hands had the so-called “right of the first night.” Including the landowners in Rus'.

There is no reliable information about how this custom developed and existed. But he definitely was. Surviving documents prove that the feudal lords were not very keen to use this right. But they referred to it in order to extract a little more of something significant from their subjects. In order for the right of the first night to remain with the newly-made husband, the latter had to pay. For example, a ham, or some other carcass, or maybe potatoes. So, in all likelihood, potatoes were more valuable to the ruler than the village beauty.

Although it can be assumed that men sometimes remembered their right when they saw a beautiful girl. Then it could not have come at a better time.

Intimacy during the holy month of Ramadan

It is worthwhile to dwell separately on the permissions and prohibitions for believers during Ramadan. Said:

“When people fasted during the month of Ramadan and if they went to bed after sunset, it became haram for them to eat, drink and have sexual relations until the next iftar.”

It is allowed to have sexual intercourse while fasting, but only at night :

“Allah knows that you deceive yourselves and has turned to you and forgiven you. From now on, touch them and seek what Allah has prescribed for you.”

In the light of the sun, it is forbidden not only to enter into intimate relationships, but also to touch your spouse if this can arouse you. During Ramadan, more attention should be paid to spiritual cleansing.

Russian customs2

In Rus', everything was traditional with the bride and groom; they were in their first marriage bed. And even more - there was no one else in this bed except them.

The ancestors had more than enough rituals, and when it came to something serious, the number went off scale. And what could be more serious than creating a new family, and on the quiet, a new member of the community!?

Researchers disagree on how free morals were in Rus'. Some say that it is enough, to the point that before the wedding they lived together and had children, and only then got married. Obviously, this can be considered true for the time of paganism. With the advent of Christianity, virginity became of great importance.

The right to change the status belonged to the husband! In serfdom, everything was slightly transformed, but the serfs in general, soul and body, belonged to the landowner, and human destinies depended on his mood and the presence or absence of progressive views. Including newlyweds.

From the point of view of Orthodoxy, the honor of making a girl a woman belonged only to the husband. And in order for them to become one, a wedding was needed, where, in fact, everything happened.

Until now, it is not customary for Orthodox Christians to celebrate a wedding on Lent or a church holiday. In those days, this rule was strictly observed.

It was customary to organize the wedding night (otherwise known as the basement) in a cold room (barn, bathhouse, closet). Moreover, the premises belonged to the groom, since, according to custom, the girl went to her husband’s family.

Bedding from the bride's dowry was laid on the wedding bed. And they decorated it with sheaves, bags of flour and other objects as amulets against poverty and infertility.

The bed was treated to the blow of a whip, which drove away evil spirits, and only after that could it receive the newlyweds.

The first marital sex took place ritually:

  • the bride did not eat for a whole day, because it is easier to get pregnant this way. But she sang farewell songs all day and participated in numerous rituals;
  • eavesdroppers and spies remained near the doors, supposedly driving away restless spirits;
  • the bride and groom ate bread and chicken, again, to increase the family;
  • the girl took off her husband's boots as a sign of submission;
  • the process itself. By the way, defloration was considered a fact of marriage not in heaven, but on earth;

  • the girl showed off her bloody shirt as a sign of innocence. If the demonstration didn’t go well, she covered herself and her family with shame. The worst thing they could do was return him to his parents;
  • If everything went well, the guests beat pots and hung towels with red threads.

After the ritual, the bride and groom were addressed as young people. And this meant the birth of a new legal family.

Moving to her husband's house and a rich dowry

So, the wedding feast and celebration were left behind. But it is not immediately possible for the young husband and wife to finally be alone. And only after the keeper of the hearth has completely moved with her things to her husband’s house. And, of course, he will bring all the numerous dowries. The girl’s parents have been collecting all things, linen and other valuables from the dowry almost since her birth. And you have to work hard: you need to sew at least four dozen hand-embroidered pillows and blankets.

Traditions of the first wedding night in different countries3

There are countless features of the first wedding night! The tribes of the black continent are especially pleased.

On the night after the wedding in some countries the groom was absent:

  • in South America: the bride’s first man was a sorcerer;
  • in Zaire: the leader deflowered the bride because the groom did not want to bother. Yes, the care and love is obvious. But whose?

There is only one country where there is no bride at a wedding: Tanzania. She sits at home and waits for her betrothed. If it waits, sex will take place after the wedding. May be. If the groom is not drunk with alcoholic drinks.

The first wedding night goes without sex:

  • in the Philippines. The offspring must be healthy, therefore, alcohol should not be consumed. The choice between alcohol and sex is not in favor of the latter;
  • among Muslims. If the couple did not know each other before the wedding (and this is rumored to still happen), then you can just talk, get to know each other, eat sweets, read prayers for peace of mind. And if all this seems out of date, then off to bed.
  • in India. The first sex is postponed for three days, since it requires spiritual unity, which is possible among people who know each other well. So time is given for recognition;
  • in Macedonia. The bride and groom are fighting for shoes and a hat. Whoever wins is the head of the family. Before sex?
  • in Mexico, Peru, Brazil. Newlyweds postpone their wedding night until the new moon: into a new life with the new moon!
  • in Central Africa: there is also no time for sex on the first night. Before the fight! They say that the fatal outcome of such fights is extremely rare. It consoles, of course, but not much;
  • in Dagestan. It’s impossible to say that the first night passes without sex, but it’s also impossible to say that with it. If we get lucky. The fact is that here, too, newlyweds fight, and the man takes his wife to bed only if he wins. Which is difficult, because the girls in those parts are tough and have been preparing for confrontation since childhood.

Rituals preceding the night of love:

  • In Uganda, the first wedding night takes place as expected. It wouldn't have passed yet! On the eve of the wedding, a relative of the bride checks the groom's ability for sex, so there can be no mistakes - if it worked with a relative, then it will work even more with his beloved;
  • In Korea, before the marriage bed, the groom's heels are hit with fish to increase potency.

Rituals after the wedding night:

  • in Turkey they still boast about a sheet with blood. If they are very proud, they can wave;
  • in Kyrgyzstan: if the wife was innocent, after the wedding night they hang out a new basin, if not, the old one.

Strange rituals:

  • in the Berber tribe in North Africa: there is sex between newlyweds, but not alone, but in the company of experienced relatives;
  • in Kenya: even there you can’t stay alone, a relative is watching under the bed and directs the process from there, in case someone gets confused;
  • among the Jews: the bride does not remove the scarf from her face, and the groom does not pray in the evening. Let's say the groom does not spend time on prayers in order to save strength for what is needed. But why the scarf is on the face is a mystery;

  • in Africa: in local tribes, the bride’s two front teeth are knocked out on her wedding night. That's right, who sees the stamp in the passport? And here everything is in plain sight, just smile;
  • once again in Africa, but at the beginning of the era: all the guests slept with the bride for gifts. It is strange to think that this custom has survived to this day, just like the one where a male gorilla deflowers a bride. And if they did survive, it was not as a mating ritual. So there is no point in breaking down and running to the dark continent. And on others today you can find similar marital and extramarital dances;
  • in Samoa: the night passes among relatives, and under no circumstances should they be awakened. If it was not possible to maintain silence, they beat you;
  • in Thailand: the wedding night will not work if the cat does not enter the room first. And the bigger the better;
  • in Sudan: the groom will not go to bed unless the bride has shaved her head.

It is possible, of course, according to Western standards - boring, traditional, pompous. It is much more interesting to make a wedding outside the box. Of course, only if there is a readiness for the consequences.

Zarema:

- I `m muslim. In our country it is strictly forbidden to marry someone other than a girl. My father and brother would have killed me for this. I didn’t wear a hijab, I dressed, although modestly, but in general like everyone else. My dad is a businessman and never spared money for his children, so I always had beautiful dresses, but just dresses, and never open ones. This did not disadvantage me in any way; someone even envied me because the clothes were of very high quality and expensive. However, in high school I realized that I was still not like everyone else. Nowadays it is customary for young people to celebrate birthdays in rented apartments or guest houses (of course, those who have the opportunity). There are no orgies going on there, young people just want to have fun without adult supervision. Yes, sit at night, and what's wrong with that? Young people still have a lot of energy; they can stay up until the morning and then go to school or work. I was never allowed to attend such holidays, and I felt left out.

Traditional wedding night4

Perhaps in modern society, wedding night standards have been introduced by Hollywood and the media, to which psychologists have joined. And this is what happened.

How the first wedding night should ideally go:

  • As this night goes, so will the sex life in marriage, psychotherapists say. Which means, bloody nose, it should be unforgettable and romantic;
  • romance is, first of all, underwear, both women's and men's;
  • as well as bedding. If you want to slide - silk, get stuck - cotton;
  • a hotel room, better for newlyweds, with a nice little gift to boot;
  • champagne is a must;
  • flowers and wedding posters, especially if at home, to add a festive touch;
  • place candles around, the more the better;
  • sprinkle something fragrant in the corners, or scented candles;
  • do not be afraid or embarrassed, anxiety is a distraction;
  • talk about everything, including what happens in bed.

And many more tips on what to do to make the memories the best and most sublime. This is advice from psychologists and wedding planners. How does everything happen in real life?

Appearance

Cloth

The main elements of the Karachai men's national costume are:

  1. Shirt in the form of a tunic.
  2. Kelek, which is sewn from black or white fabric. The festive version can be striped.
  3. Chepken - outerwear, which is now called Circassian. This is primarily a festive type of clothing made from cloth. Chepken was decorated with silver coins. A characteristic feature of this item of clothing were special cutouts in which charges were stored. They are called gazyrs.
  4. The Karachai belt is usually narrow, made of leather, and decorated with silver plaques. A belt is always an important element of clothing; a man is not supposed to appear in public without it.

Pants in a traditional Karachai costume are called kenchek. They are slightly narrowed and have a wide wedge. Leggings are put on over them, which can reach the knees. The headdress is a papakha hat, characteristic of many Caucasian peoples. On holidays they wear an astrakhan hat, and on a hike they wear a burka. Shoes are made from rawhide and are worn almost all year round. With the onset of winter, felt boots are worn.

Women's clothing had its own characteristics. Girls wore dresses decorated with yarn. The festive dress was made of velvet; as a rule, it was dark red in color. Such dresses were decorated with embroidery made of gold threads. The kamar belt was considered the most expensive, and the cap looked no less luxurious.

Story

The Karachays lived in the Karachay region, they had their own princes and an established way of life. However, at the beginning of the 19th century, the Russian army invaded the area, which led to the annexation of Karachay to the Russian Empire. This helped protect Karachay from defeat and preserve all the customs that had formed over the long years of the people’s life. The independence movement began in 1831, which caused some Karachais to leave their native lands. Their descendants still live in other countries, for example, Turkey. The most difficult period in the life of the people was the deportation, which began in 1943. Its cause was the occupation of the territory by fascist troops. To avoid possible cooperation with the fascist army, the Soviet government resettled people en masse to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The people managed to rehabilitate themselves only in 1957. At the same time, the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region was created, which was later transformed into a republic.
