First wedding night in Africa: crazy customs and strange traditions (16 photos)

How is the first wedding night celebrated in different nations of the world?

Rwanda: in the Bahutu tribe

Anything can happen on the path to family happiness. For example, in the Bahutu tribe, newlyweds are required to beat each other before their wedding night. At the same time, the wife must strike her husband with everything that comes to hand, after which the young woman, with a sense of fulfilled duty, goes to her father’s house. And this continues for a whole week, at the end of which the act of love occurs. According to this custom, spouses pour out all their emotions on each other, and then live happily ever after.

North Africa: inviting tutors

Berbers are the general name for the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa who converted to Islam in the 7th century, from the western borders of Egypt in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west and from the Niger River in the south to the Mediterranean Sea in the north. The bride and groom from the Berber tribes are never alone immediately after the wedding. Their wedding night is a collective one. In the large bedroom, the newlyweds are joined by several married couples. And the experienced pass on their experience to the young and help the young get rid of embarrassment. This event lasts up to five days.

Philippines: no sex

Newlyweds in the Philippines are essentially deprived of their wedding night: they will, of course, be allowed to sleep, but no more! Guests and relatives are vigilant to ensure that the newlyweds do not remain alone, and there is a reason for this: in this way they try to avoid conception while intoxicated.

Mauritania: thinness is regarded as ugliness

As you know, most brides dream of losing extra pounds before their wedding. But in Mauritania, thinness is regarded as ugliness, and therefore, from the age of 9, young representatives of the fair sex begin to be fattened for weddings. On a day, a girl can eat up to two kilograms of millet porridge and drink about twenty liters of camel milk. There is also a custom to “fatten” the bride immediately before the wedding - the girl spends several months in a special hut with virtually no movement, eating hearty meals.

Rwanda and Kenya: mother-in-law under the bed

It's easier to work with stars

I have been doing makeup for more than 10 years. I started helping stylists and makeup artists at photo shoots, and then I went to work in a club, where I painted go-go girls and artists at night, and made decorations during the day. Now I do weddings, photo shoots, and film makeup.

My clients are different - from little girls who want to show off at prom, to serious artists whom I do makeup for when filming a video. I remember the first time I went to see a famous person. Then I was simply pounded brutally, although I already had six years of experience under my belt. But everything went just fine. I can already say that the more serious and status a person is, the easier it is to work with him. Stars only occasionally give some advice, they sit without moving, like marble statues, they don’t itch, they don’t jump, they don’t spin.

Polynesia: “One for all and all for one”

Unlike Tunisia, where people only learn about the wedding night by the candle, in Polynesia people take part not in words, but in deeds. Before a husband sees his wife in his love bed, all his friends must see her. The bride spends the first night with her husband's friends, ranging from the oldest man to the youngest. This tradition is associated with an ancient myth, according to which it is believed that the blood of a young wife is thoroughly saturated with demons. And so that she can cleanse herself, the only sure way is to sleep with all her husband’s friends. Only after this, the legal spouse can have sex with his woman. At this time, the rest of the women of the tribe sing loudly and dance around the place where the ritual is being performed.

Virgin swing

Among the Zulu people, at a wedding, before the newlyweds leave for their wedding night, the families of the bride and groom arrange a kind of dance competition. The culmination of the competition is the bride's dance, during which she must raise her leg as high as possible and remain in this position for as long as possible in front of her mother, who in the meantime must look under her skirt and make sure that she is still a virgin. If you think about it, this moment is a pure formality - unless the mother is an experienced gynecologist. But the guests are probably satisfied.

Flight of a newborn

Rituals associated with the birth of children are different for every nation in the world. The strangest ritual has been practiced in the Indian state of Karnataka for more than 500 years.

Muslim couples who become parents come to the Sri Santswara temple for blessings, after which they climb the temple tower with their newborn. From there the baby is dropped from a 15-meter height onto a sheet held by the men below.

A bizarre ritual is needed for a child to grow healthy, strong, resilient and lucky. Every year more than 200 children under two years of age pass through it. Their “flight” is accompanied by songs and dances of an enthusiastic crowd.

In the villages of Tunisia, the groom, having fulfilled his marital duty, must immediately light a candle and place it on the window. So he tells the whole village, carefully watching through the windows, that everything went as it should, and the bride was a virgin. It is not known whether the newlyweds feel awkward that the entire village is immediately privy to their intimate life?

Force feeding

It's no secret that women all over the world sometimes make great efforts to look perfect. But men in some areas of Mauritania love fat women, which is why they force-feed them before the wedding.

This tradition originated in the 11th century and continues to this day. The ritual of force feeding is called “Leblouh”. In Arab-Berber families, it is customary to marry girls aged 5-9 years, and by this age the bride must meet beauty standards.

The custom is also practiced in other parts of Africa, and if it is not possible to feed the “bride” at home, the girls are sent to farms where they are force-fed.

Oh this wedding

I often work at weddings. Here, incidents are the norm. Very often, brides are so worried that relatives pour them 50 grams “for peace of mind.” When I arrive at five in the morning, the bride is carried out to me, she is seated in a chair, and then we “breathe the air,” drink coffee and in every possible way reanimate the girl so that both her eyes do not close and look in the same direction.

I always meet with brides two weeks before the wedding and ask: girls, please, well, don’t do anything to yourself! But no: facial cleansing begins, when all the skin peels off, masks according to grandma’s recipe, with an inevitable allergic reaction, fresh tattoos that are covered with bloody crusts (a kind of wedding gift - the inscription “LOVE FOREVER” on the shoulder).

Massacre in the Bahutu tribe, Rwanda

Let's start with, perhaps, one of the wildest and at the same time long foreplay. In the Bahutu tribe, before the newlyweds begin their immediate duties, they must beat each other. Moreover, the wife has the right to beat her newly-made husband with any objects that come to her hand. After the fight ends, the wife goes back to her father's house. This whole cycle of beatings and running away to his father continues for exactly a week. And only at the end do they finally give in to the act of love. According to the beliefs of the tribe, this custom allows you to throw out all your emotions on each other, after which the marriage becomes truly happy and long-lasting.

The third one is not superfluous

The Banyankole tribe, living in northwestern Uganda, has a strange tradition. Before the bride gets married, her aunt must sleep with her groom. An experienced woman in this way checks that a man’s potency is okay, and at the same time evaluates his talents in bed. Then, on the wedding night, the aunt is also present in the newlyweds’ room - but this time in the role of a coach: she tells inexperienced young people what and how to do. I wonder how they even cope in such an environment?

Penalty for death

Representatives of the Masai tribe living in the provinces of Kenya are famous for their unusual traditions. Unlike most peoples of the world, they do not recognize death as a natural process and are always looking for someone to blame.

The deceased is placed under a tree, community members sit around and wait for the body to fall. The one in whose direction it fell is considered guilty. The deceased “indicated” that the criminal must pay a fine to his family. You can wait for a “sign” for an hour or two or several days, but the truth is more expensive.

The Masai are one of the strangest tribes in the world. Teenagers will not be considered men until they pull the lion's tail. And not just anywhere, but at its very base. The leader gives the boys the right to choose: if they don’t want to mess with the predator, let them kick the rhinoceros in the nose three times.

Let there be blood!

In Ethiopia, the main concern on the wedding night is also the bride's virginity. She must take her white head cover with her to the bedroom - this is where she should leave traces of blood. While the newlyweds indulge in pleasures, the newly-made mother-in-law and the groom's witness are waiting outside the door. Immediately after the end of the process, the girl must take out the scarf stained with blood. If for some reason there is no blood, the young husband has the right to flog his wife with a whip and even abandon her, sending her back to her parents and demanding full compensation for the ransom.

Initiation by ants

The TOP of the strangest traditions of different countries includes initiation into men. It is passed by the boys of the Satere-Mawe people living in Brazil.

With the onset of puberty, the shaman gathers them and takes them into the jungle. There, the boys will need to collect aggressive bullet ants, which sting painfully and feel like gunshot wounds. The insects are fumigated with special herbs and the sleepy ones are collected in special gloves.

After waking up, the ants become even more aggressive, but this fact does not bother anyone. The shaman orders the boys to put gloves on their hands and dance for 10 minutes so as not to think from the pain. Initiation will take place if the teenager survives the torture 20 times.

Fertility phallus

No less curious are sexual customs, rituals, and zest can be found in the traditions of any nation in the world. Even conservative Japan has interesting rituals.

There has been a cult of the phallus here since ancient times - the annual Kanamara Matsuri festival is held in its honor. On this day, a wooden penis 2.5 meters long and weighing 25 kg is carried through the streets of the city, which is considered a symbol of the fertility of people and the earth.

The Japanese and tourists who come to the holiday carry miniature phalluses made of papier-mâché in their hands. The streets are filled with piquant souvenirs. Sex on holidays is encouraged, especially passionate and fantasy sex.
