• Wild traditions of the first wedding night in different countries
You probably already know about the right of the first night (and if not, we’ll tell you), but it turns out that this is not the worst thing!
The same “right of the first night”
The right of the first night is perhaps the right of landowners and feudal lords, which existed in the Middle Ages, after the marriage of dependent peasants, to spend the first night with the bride, depriving her of her virginity. The same right existed in many Indian cultures of South America for sorcerers or for leaders. Today this custom seems wild and outrageous to us, but in fact it is not known whether it existed in the form in which we imagine it. Scientists now believe that references to the right of the first night were used by European feudal lords as a technique for obtaining benefits: in historical documents, the right of the first night is never mentioned in itself, but only in connection with a “bribe.”
Here is one example: a certain Larivière-Bourdet from Normandy, in a document dated 1419, declared: “In this case, I also have the right to collect from my people and others when they marry in my domain, 10 sous of Tours and a loin of a pig along the entire ridge and up to the ear, as well as a gallon of any drink added to this provision, or I can and must, if I consider it best, lie with the bride in the event that her husband or his messenger does not give me or my authorized one of the above-mentioned of things".
That is, it was possible to buy off the right of the first night - if there was anything. Or, if there was nothing, it was worth counting on that the overlord would not consider a night with a freshly baked bride a blessing.
Philippines: no sex!
Newlyweds in the Philippines are essentially deprived of their wedding night: they will, of course, be allowed to sleep, but no more! Guests and relatives are vigilant to ensure that the newlyweds do not remain alone, and there is a reason for this: in this way they try to avoid conception while intoxicated.
Berbers: invite tutors
Berbers are the general name for the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa who converted to Islam in the 7th century, from the western borders of Egypt in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west and from the Niger River in the south to the Mediterranean Sea in the north. In this culture, it is customary to extend the first wedding night for several days, because the newlyweds should learn from their older friends! That is, in fact, the first wedding night turns into an orgy: not only the newlyweds themselves participate in it, but also several experienced married couples.
Rwanda and Kenya: mother-in-law under the bed
In the culture of the peoples of these countries, arranged marriages are still practiced, and the bride and groom often meet directly at the wedding. Therefore, an older relative of the bride, most often the mother, comes to the aid of the newlyweds. In order not to embarrass the young people, the woman climbs under the bed and directs the process from there. Another of her tasks is to make sure that everything goes as it should and in the morning provide guests with proof of the bride’s virginity - a bloody sheet.
Nkole: potency test
The Nkole (or Ankole, Banyankole) are a Bantus people living in southwestern Uganda. In this culture, it is also customary to provide assistance to newlyweds, and this is also done by the bride’s older relative, although this time it is more often a married aunt. Only she does it differently: even before the wedding, the assistant spends the night with the groom and makes her verdict on whether the fighter is fit for military service or not. If you are not suitable, there will be no wedding.
Korea: do you want bream?
We discovered the strangest and most mysterious custom of the first wedding night in Korea. More precisely, it is rather a custom of preparation for the first wedding night: when the wedding feast ends, the bride retires to the bedroom, and the groom is left alone with his close friends, who take off his... socks. And not at all because he himself will forget, but going to bed in socks is unsexy: friends take off the groom’s socks to hit him on the heels... with fish! In the process, they ask the groom tricky questions and, if he answers incorrectly, they begin to beat him even harder. It is believed that this is how friends help the groom not to make a mistake on his wedding night, because spanking the heels with fish supposedly works better on men than Viagra. To be honest, we haven’t checked it and we don’t recommend it to you either.

What should the outfit be like?
Everyone knows the sign that the groom is forbidden to see his beloved’s dress before the wedding. What other signs associated with clothing did our ancestors have?
The bride's shoes must not have laces, and the girl's toes must be covered. If the bride wears shoes that reveal her toes, then in marriage she will always “walk barefoot,” that is, poverty awaits her and her husband.
Our grandmothers believed that if the bride’s outfit consisted of a corset and a skirt, that is, two separate pieces of clothing, then her life with the groom would be just as separate, and there would be no agreement and unity in the family. Therefore, the bride should choose a one-piece dress for her wedding.
If the decor of the bride's dress suggests that there will be buttons on it, then their number must be carefully counted. There must be an even number of them.

The bride's friend, who is already married and happily married, should put the earrings in the bride's ears. It is believed that then the newlywed will live with her husband in happiness and joy.
If suddenly unwanted folds are found on the bride’s dress before leaving the house, then the bride’s friend or one of her relatives should iron it. Under no circumstances should the bride and her mother be allowed to iron the dress; this promises failure in the upcoming marriage.
The dress must be worn over the head only. If the bride wears a dress over her legs, then, according to superstition, the marriage will be unhappy.
You need to pin a pin to the clothes of both the bride and the groom on the wrong side. This will protect the young couple from the evil eye on their special day.
The bride's friends are prohibited from trying on the wedding dress or headdress, as they could take away her family happiness.

You cannot sell a dress, veil or other jewelry after the wedding. Our grandmothers kept this outfit all their lives and believed that when they sold it, they would give up their happiness and part with their loved ones.
Polynesia: “One for all and all for one”
Unlike Tunisia, where people only learn about the wedding night by the candle, in Polynesia people take part not in words, but in deeds. Before a husband sees his wife in his love bed, all his friends must see her. The bride spends the first night with her husband's friends, ranging from the oldest man to the youngest. This tradition is associated with an ancient myth, according to which it is believed that the blood of a young wife is thoroughly saturated with demons. And so that she can cleanse herself, the only sure way is to sleep with all her husband’s friends. Only after this, the legal spouse can have sex with his woman. At this time, the rest of the women of the tribe sing loudly and dance around the place where the ritual is being performed.
USA
In America, even in the 19th century, a strange tradition was practiced called “the night of noise.” What is its essence? The roots of this custom go back to the Middle Ages. On the wedding night, the guests did not go home, but disturbed the newlyweds in every possible way, made noise, had fun, shouted and disturbed the spouses.
Even one of the country's former presidents, Stephen Grover Cleveland, fell victim to this tradition.
• Wild traditions of the first wedding night in different countries
There are so many wedding traditions! The Scots douse the bride with dirty slurry; among some peoples in India, it is customary to marry a tree first before marrying a person; in Korea, the groom is hit on the heels with a fish. But in terms of originality, Africa is naturally ahead of the rest. They even have some kind of bacchanalia going on there during their first wedding night.
Team of tutors
The bride and groom from the Berber tribes are never alone immediately after the wedding. Their wedding night is a collective one. In the large bedroom, the newlyweds are joined by several married couples. And the experienced pass on their experience to the young and help the young get rid of embarrassment. This event lasts up to five days.
Everything is fine, I was holding a candle
In Rwanda, Kenya and other countries where Swahili is spoken, newlyweds are also not left unattended. In order for them to understand all the intricacies of intercourse, since ancient times, the eldest relative of the bride has been laid under a richly decorated marriage bed. She gives all kinds of advice, and in the morning she testifies how everything went.
Unexpected joy
In the Shona tribe, the wedding night is held before the wedding and turns out to be a complete surprise for the groom. After the engagement, the girl, accompanied by numerous relatives, can visit her future husband’s house any day. The groom's unsuspecting relatives must notice the procession in time and greet it with a joyful dance. This tests the ability of the groom and his family to cope with unexpected problems. If everything went well, the bride stays overnight.
Lice test
In the Banyankole tribe, living in northwestern Uganda, the bride's aunt plays an important role in the marriage. In order to make sure that the groom does not have problems with potency, before the wedding she spends the night with her niece’s chosen ones. Of course, the aunt is present in the room during the wedding night.
In bed with a stranger
In many African countries, marriages are organized by parents, and their children see each other for the first time only at the wedding. And in Tanzania everything is still stricter. The bride does not participate in the celebrations at all. While everyone is having fun, she, all dressed up, sits at home waiting for her husband. He arrives in the night and married life begins.
Night of humor
For Libyan Muslims, weddings last at least five days. The first three, the bride and groom spend separately, each in their own home. On the fourth day, the bride organizes a party, where the groom is invited in the company of friends. During the evening, friends are simply obliged to make as much noise as possible and make dirty jokes about what will happen today behind closed doors. The humor does not stop even when the young people retire.
Bareheaded
In the Sudanese Nuer tribe, after the wedding feast, friends take the bride to the groom’s village, where they first shave her head bald, and only then take her to her husband. The meaning of this ritual is not entirely clear, but the fact remains: a girl with hair has no right to go to bed with her legal husband.

Apple of temptation in China
In China, an apple for a couple is not a symbol of discord, but, on the contrary, an object of rapprochement. A relative holds an apple on a string, and the newlyweds try to bite into it. Of course, their lips touch in the process. A cunning relative may remove the apple altogether, after which the couple simply collides with their lips and kisses. This is similar to the Russian wedding tradition of shouting “Gorko”, but the Chinese call this action “Nao Dongfang”.
Massacre in the Bahutu tribe, Rwanda
Let's start with, perhaps, one of the wildest and at the same time long foreplay. In the Bahutu tribe, before the newlyweds begin their immediate duties, they must beat each other. Moreover, the wife has the right to beat her newly-made husband with any objects that come to her hand. After the fight ends, the wife goes back to her father's house. This whole cycle of beatings and running away to his father continues for exactly a week. And only at the end do they finally give in to the act of love. According to the beliefs of the tribe, this custom allows you to throw out all your emotions on each other, after which the marriage becomes truly happy and long-lasting.
How is the first wedding night celebrated in different nations of the world?
Rwanda: in the Bahutu tribe
Anything can happen on the path to family happiness. For example, in the Bahutu tribe, newlyweds are required to beat each other before their wedding night. At the same time, the wife must strike her husband with everything that comes to hand, after which the young woman, with a sense of fulfilled duty, goes to her father’s house. And this continues for a whole week, at the end of which the act of love occurs. According to this custom, spouses pour out all their emotions on each other, and then live happily ever after.

Mauritania: thinness is regarded as ugliness
As you know, most brides dream of losing extra pounds before their wedding. But in Mauritania, thinness is regarded as ugliness, and therefore, from the age of 9, young representatives of the fair sex begin to be fattened for weddings. On a day, a girl can eat up to two kilograms of millet porridge and drink about twenty liters of camel milk. There is also a custom to “fatten” the bride immediately before the wedding - the girl spends several months in a special hut with virtually no movement, eating hearty meals.
