Bonbonnieres are a new wedding tradition that we really support! It’s so important to say “thank you” to your guests for their support, gifts and for sharing such an important day with you. We will give you tips on how to choose gifts for guests, when to present them and show you 23 ideas for bonbonnieres for your wedding.
History of the bonbonniere
The tradition of giving guests bonbonnieres originated in France in the 16th century. Then these were boxes of sweets, which were considered of great value, because sweet delicacies at that time were brought from India and they were very expensive.
In the Middle Ages, such a tradition could only be found at the weddings of noble people, since ordinary people could not afford expensive bonbonnieres. In addition, the bonbonniere boxes were often used to assess the well-being of the bride and groom, which is why many rich newlyweds made them from gold, silver or porcelain and even encrusted them with precious stones.
In those days, it was customary to put an odd number of candies in a box (most often it was glazed almonds). Three nuts symbolized the groom, the bride and their unborn child, five nuts symbolized happiness, longevity, health, wealth and fertility.
There was a similar custom at Slavic weddings: each guest, in response to his congratulations, was given a small cupcake, which was called a “cone.”
How to make a boombox
Another New Year's accompaniment was a variety of balls made of threads, all kinds of shapes, colors and creation systems. As a rule, they are made quite quickly and can have a flat, hollow or round shape.
The boom box consists of wool thread, glue and a cardboard base. Together these things create a wonderful creation. The first step is to prepare all the attributes in advance so that in the future you will not be distracted from creating the intended image.
How to make a boombox:
- a circle is cut out on cardboard;
- there is a small circle inside it;
- threads are taken and wound through a small hole, completely covering the form
- the process continues until all connectors are hidden;
- then a loop is threaded;
- We cut the resulting creation along the edges, and we get a round and fluffy ball.
The work is completed, the holiday mood attribute is ready for use.
When to give gifts to guests
An elegant souvenir can be presented next to each plate, and if they are signed with the names of the invited people, then each person can take his place at the table.
Also, a surprise in the form of sweets or a souvenir can be given to the guest after he gives his gift to the newlyweds.
You can give boxes to guests during competitions, but then you need to involve all the people present in the game.
Scheme and stages of creation
Template - print a photo of the envelope on a sheet of paper, cut it out and attach it to a blank sheet of paper. Mark the lines where you will need to fold the envelope and glue it, then carefully bend the ends and glue it. You can use the idea of a “seal” like in old films: red, with the coat of arms of the future family.
To make the bonbonniere bags neat and identical, you can use a plate as a universal pattern to get identical mugs for future bags. We place the plate on the tulle, make marks with soap on which piece of fabric to cut and cut out circles. Place sweets in the center of the circle, form a bag and tie with a ribbon. For a wedding, it is not recommended to choose fabric with a combination of several bright colors, unless they match the overall design of the banquet area.

The decor is located on the front side of the bag and on the ribbon that ties it. You can use satin ribbons, small artificial flowers, rhinestones and beads as decorations.
If you are planning a classic wedding without matching any style, then for the base you usually choose a plain fabric or with a simple pattern in the form of plant motifs.
Filling
The filling of the bonbonniere can be either edible or not. Let's look at the tasty options first.
- Candies. It is preferable to take lollipops, caramel or chewing candies, since chocolate ones will definitely melt in a warm room.
- Chocolate. There is great scope for imagination: you can order tiles of any original shape or paint the packaging with good wishes. Let us remind you that it is better to store sweets in a cool place in order to present a pleasant souvenir, and not something that has spread.
- Jam. Bridal hostesses who want to make a favorable impression on their guests can prepare tiny jars of homemade jam. If you don’t have time to deal with such a labor-intensive process, you can give store-bought or custom-brewed jam.
- Honey. Instead of jam, you can put honey inside the jar. A sweet and healthy souvenir.
- Nuts. A good option would be a small assortment of nuts. And it is stored for a long time and does not get dirty. Healthy and tasty.
- Bakery. You can present heart-shaped cupcakes, macaroons, and gingerbread cookies. They retain their taste relatively well, regardless of external conditions.

Now the wedding industry has developed so much that you can decorate any sweet to suit the taste of the newlyweds. Using a certain color scheme, you can make various inscriptions: the names of the spouses, the date of the celebration. The shape can also be different: doves, flowers, hearts, ribbons - in general, everything that reminds of the wedding.
- Bath salt. You just need to choose a color scheme that matches the overall style of the wedding celebration, and a cute souvenir will remind you of this happy day for a long time. You can use salt for its intended purpose or leave it as interior decoration.
- Handmade soap. The shape can be different: traditional heart, flowers, animals. Or original, understandable only to a narrow circle of initiates. It all depends on the imagination of the bride and groom, the format of the celebration and the preferences of the guests. After all, the purpose of any gift is to please and surprise.
- Soap petals. Filling a box or jar with weightless fragrant soap petals is a great idea.
- Handmade candles. The shape, color and decoration can also be anything, in the general style of the holiday or contrasting. Guests will be happy to remember your wedding, looking at the decorative candle decorating the shelf in their apartment.
- Key rings. A memorable souvenir for loved ones can be decorated with a photograph of the newlyweds or contain information about the place and time of the celebration.
- Magnets. You can paint them by hand or use them as photo decoration.
- Sachet. A bag of aromatic herbs is quite suitable as a small gift for those present at the wedding. Original and cute!
Mint candies
A very interesting option. With a “double bottom”, so to speak. On the one hand, these are just mint candies, refreshing dragees, etc. However, this tradition did not start out of a great love for mint. It's all about the expression “Meant to be”, which is an idiom and roughly translates as “predetermined”, “destined”. The word "mint" in English is written as "mint", but sounds like "meant". This is where this unusual gift with subtext came from.
Honey
There are a huge number of varieties of honey. From the most famous and widespread in our region, linden, flower and buckwheat, to the rarest and most elite, such as onboard honey, coriander honey, cedar and angelica varieties. They all taste different and have health benefits. If there are a large number of invitees, you will have to spend a lot of money, because the price of one small jar (300g) of the most ordinary flower honey is about 200-300 rubles.
Combination with style
Since the bonbonniere is one of those wedding accessories that will be visible, you need to make it in harmony with the overall style of the celebration. It should be combined not only with the color palette, but also with the general idea of the wedding. If the future newlyweds decide to celebrate it in any style, then the question of what can be put in the bonbonnieres is resolved by itself. The following ideas will be useful to newlyweds:
- eco or rustic - indoor flowers in small pots (cacti or succulents are good);
- sea - souvenirs made from shells or bath salts;
- Provence - a bouquet of lavender;
- Alice in Wonderland – fruit tea;
- European – apples in caramel;
- love is – a box with chewing gum of the same name;
- boho - miniature dream catchers.
Bonbonnieres can be combined with the wedding style only externally; in this case, attention is paid to decorating the box or bag. A more original option is complete harmony of the accessory, including the content, but implementing such an idea is more difficult, since it is not always possible to find the necessary little things in the store. If you don’t know what they put in bonbonnieres for a summer wedding, the photo shows one of the suitable gift options. Tea is a universal gift.
