Tips for newlyweds with photos: what to put in a bonbonniere for wedding guests

What are bonbonnieres for a wedding?

What is a bonbonniere and what is it used for?
These are small jars, boxes or bags that can be made of various materials. Sometimes they use thick fabric or paper in which to wrap a cute present. If we talk about gift wrapping, then there are no limits to the flight of fancy. You can even make it yourself, and such a surprise will look very nice, because guests will be pleased to know that you personally participated in preparing the surprise.

Wedding salons offer their services for making bonbonnieres, but if there are a lot of guests, then you can spend a large amount of money, and the purchase will not be so cheap. Therefore, most often brides prefer to do it on their own.

What you need:

  1. Scissors.
  2. Beads.
  3. Thick cardboard.
  4. Satin ribbons.
  5. Textile.
  6. Glue and tape.

Usually decor ideas are thought out in advance. If you don’t want to make the packaging yourself, then a ready-made box bought in a store will be very useful. All you have to do is decorate it beautifully.

Combination with style

Since the bonbonniere is one of those wedding accessories that will be visible, you need to make it in harmony with the overall style of the celebration. It should be combined not only with the color palette, but also with the general idea of the wedding. If the future newlyweds decide to celebrate it in any style, then the question of what can be put in the bonbonnieres is resolved by itself. The following ideas will be useful to newlyweds:

  • eco or rustic - indoor flowers in small pots (cacti or succulents are good);
  • sea - souvenirs made from shells or bath salts;
  • Provence - a bouquet of lavender;
  • Alice in Wonderland – fruit tea;
  • European – apples in caramel;
  • love is – a box with chewing gum of the same name;
  • boho - miniature dream catchers.

Bonbonnieres can be combined with the wedding style only externally; in this case, attention is paid to decorating the box or bag. A more original option is complete harmony of the accessory, including the content, but implementing such an idea is more difficult, since it is not always possible to find the necessary little things in the store. If you don’t know what they put in bonbonnieres for a summer wedding, the photo shows one of the suitable gift options. Tea is a universal gift.

Modern bonbonniere

What is it and why is it needed, you ask? Bonbonnieres can be small boxes, bags, jars made of solid material. You can also wrap the gifts in some fabric or paper. There are no restrictions; the bride and groom can choose the design themselves, as much as their imagination allows. Usually, wedding salons are happy to offer a wide selection of wonderful bonbonnieres for every taste, but if you consider the number of invited guests, their purchase will seem quite expensive. Therefore, most brides prefer to make them themselves. Usually they are made in the same style as other wedding accessories, so you need to think about the color and decor in advance and stock up on material, cardboard, scissors, beads, and ribbons.

Why do you need an accessory?

The word “bonbonniere,” like the tradition itself, originated in France in the 16th century; it literally means “box of sweets.” Since sugar used to be imported from India, it was expensive in European countries, and not everyone could afford sweets. The same can be said about the box itself, since traditionally it was made of gold or silver. Only aristocrats could give such a gift to each guest at a wedding.

Today, bonbonnieres do not have such frames; this accessory can be found at both rich and modest weddings. Everything will depend on the materials for making the box or bag and the selected filling.

You can make accessories from ordinary colored paper, but guests will still be pleased to receive such a symbolic gift if it is made with soul.

This accessory is made to express their gratitude to friends and relatives for their desire to share their first common holiday with the newlyweds. The boxes are a kind of compliment to the guests in response to their warm wishes to the bride and groom.

How to give bonbonnieres?

Bonbonnieres can be presented to guests in the following ways:

This can be given to guests right at the entrance to the restaurant; this can be done by specially hired people, for example, mimes. Place them on wedding tables next to the cutlery. In this case, bonbonnieres can be combined with banquet cards by attaching personalized cards to them. Give in return for congratulations and wishes of the guests personally. Place the bonbonnieres in a separate place - a table, indicating with a sign that guests can take them with them as gifts

The host in the middle of the wedding reception can draw attention to the table. Present at the end of the evening after the thank you speech. This option is only suitable for small weddings, otherwise you may forget about someone. The service staff can place bonbonnieres near guests' cutlery while they dance, participate in competitions or watch fireworks.

The main thing is that at this time most of the guests are absent from the tables.

“2 in 1” accessories: place bonbonnieres near the cutlery, attaching cards with the names of the guests to them. Why not banquet seating cards?!

We bend the workpiece along the lines.

We assemble the box and glue it together using a heat gun.

We form the second part, as shown in the example.

This is how it turns out. We also glue the remaining parts in the middle.

The workpiece is ready. We try to open and close it, it should perform these functions freely. Cut the edges of the lid at an angle.

Glue the finished flower blanks on top of the bows. This decor can be made independently from various types of ribbons. The bonbonniere is ready!

How to decorate bonbonnieres

Traditionally, sweets and nice little things are placed in beautiful boxes. They are tied with bright ribbons in the color of the wedding theme, if chosen. Decorate with various dried flowers, herbs, and beads. You can place cute romantic inscriptions on the bonbonnieres or attach a tag with the guest's name.

In addition to the boxes, there are other interesting containers:

  • Bags. They can be sewn from burlap or linen, then they are suitable for weddings in rustic, barn, and loft styles. To add originality, you can decorate the fabric with embroidery. For more classic wedding styles, bags made of silk, organza, and tulle are suitable.
  • Glass jars. They can be used for jam, honey, jelly. You can stick a beautiful label on the jar, decorate the lid with fabric or decorative paper, and tie it with twine or thick thread.
  • Other interesting containers: decorative buckets, small bottles, tin jars, miniature paper shopping bags. They are well suited not only for bonbonnieres made from sweets and lollipops, but also for other small items.

What can you fill with

What will be in the bonbonniere depends on the imagination and material resources of the newlyweds. Do not forget that there will be men and women at the holiday, so it is better not to give the first lipstick or tube of cream you like, it would be better to take something universal.

It is customary to put various sweets (sweets, caramel, chocolate, homemade cookies, lollipops), coffee beans, tea, dried fruits, nuts, chewing gum or dragees into bonbonniere bags. Also suitable as a filling for the bonbonniere is a small bottle of water or any drink, an indoor flower, magnets, bath salts or aromatic soap, a jar of honey or jam, it can also be a basket of flowers, but very small in size.

Why do you need a bonbonniere?

The name comes from the French bonbonniere and literally translates as a candy bowl or box for chocolates (bonbon - candy). The very first European bonbonnieres were made by jewelers from silver and ivory and were richly decorated. They were filled with sweets and presented to the guests of honor at the wedding as a sign of special respect.

This beautiful tradition has been preserved. But now such candy bowls are most often made of paper - from ordinary colored or thicker designer cardboard. Wedding bonbonnieres are designed in the general style of the celebration and are complemented with a decorative tag with words of gratitude. The boxes are handed over when meeting guests at the beginning of the holiday or signed and laid out next to the plates, replacing place cards with them.

Bonbonnieres are appropriate to give to guests at Christmas, birthdays and other holidays as a sign of gratitude for attending the event. A box decorated with a heart can easily replace a Valentine's card on February 14th. In this case, you can put a small gift inside for your loved one.

It’s easy to make a small candy box with your own hands from any thick paper

This is the case when only the attention and time spent preparing a surprise are valuable, and not its cost.

Additional Tips

It is advisable to make the filling for bonbonnieres the same for all guests so that no one feels uncomfortable. You can only make a division into men, women and children in order to present them with the corresponding little things. For example, men won't be too happy with sachets or flowers, and women won't be too happy with tie clips or cigars.

It is not recommended to put too expensive souvenirs in the bonbonniere; this may cause inconvenience for some guests. In itself, such a gift will already be pleasant, since it is not present at all weddings.

When filling bonbonnieres, it is advisable to choose gentle and cute gifts, since the tradition itself provides for a mood for romance.

Expert advice: It is not recommended to use bright, flashy details, unless the wedding style requires it (for example, the theme of the dudes). An exception may be a youth wedding, where you can present little things with humor to friends and family.

In addition to choosing packaging and filling, you need to decide on the method of presenting the bonbonniere.

The following options exist:

  • place on plates before the start of the banquet;
  • instruct the waiters to place the plates next to them during the general dance;
  • put on a separate table so that guests can sort out the gifts themselves when it is convenient;
  • give to guests during farewell;
  • give in response to congratulations.

The bride and groom can come up with original options for bonbonnieres, based on already proven ideas and taking into account the character and mood of their guests. It doesn’t matter what exactly the future newlyweds put in a bag or pouch, the main thing is that it is done from the heart, then the guests will definitely appreciate the efforts.

Useful video: do it yourself

The video tutorial shows how to make a small heart-shaped box with a window. You can put any little things in it that will be visible through the transparent film. After watching the lesson, it won’t be difficult to make a “Heart” bonbonniere template yourself.

Making such accessories will not take much time, since they are made according to the same template. If you wish, you can decorate the boxes and windows themselves, adding personality to them. This option can be called economical, since only cardboard, thick transparent film and ribbons for decoration are used.

If not too many guests are invited to the wedding, the bride and groom can start making boxes using the scrapbooking technique. The main thing is to make a template for the “Heart” bonbonniere in advance.

This option takes more time, so it is not always suitable for a large-scale celebration. The result is cute and elegant, once again emphasizing the hard work and creativity of the heroes of the occasion.

Blanks are cut out of ordinary or designer cardboard, which are then glued together using double-sided tape. It turns out to be a neat heart, which all that remains is to fill with the selected gifts and decorate using the same technique. For this, lace ribbons and satin bows are used. If desired, you can use rhinestones, newspaper or magazine clippings, three-dimensional elements in the form of butterflies, flowers, etc.

Filling

The filling of the bonbonniere can be either edible or not. Let's look at the tasty options first.

  • Candies. It is preferable to take lollipops, caramel or chewing candies, since chocolate ones will definitely melt in a warm room.
  • Chocolate. There is great scope for imagination: you can order tiles of any original shape or paint the packaging with good wishes. Let us remind you that it is better to store sweets in a cool place in order to present a pleasant souvenir, and not something that has spread.
  • Jam. Bridal hostesses who want to make a favorable impression on their guests can prepare tiny jars of homemade jam. If you don’t have time to deal with such a labor-intensive process, you can give store-bought or custom-brewed jam.
  • Honey. Instead of jam, you can put honey inside the jar. A sweet and healthy souvenir.
  • Nuts. A good option would be a small assortment of nuts. And it is stored for a long time and does not get dirty. Healthy and tasty.
  • Bakery. You can present heart-shaped cupcakes, macaroons, and gingerbread cookies. They retain their taste relatively well, regardless of external conditions.

The choice of filling for the bonbonniere is not limited in any way, but it is recommended to combine memorable little things with the overall style of the wedding.

Edible gifts

If you are thinking about what to put in bonbonnieres for a wedding and are considering edible options, then you can settle on the following solutions:

  • Candies. You can use chocolate, caramel, dragees, or the beloved Raffaello, which has become an unspoken symbol of love. You can add a few M&M's or Skittles to the candies if the bright multi-colored jelly beans match the overall wedding decor;

  • Natural tea or coffee. You can buy the product by weight and distribute it evenly into transparent bags.

New Year's bonbonnieres

Candy bowls were originally invented as a decorative addition to the New Year and Christmas. They magically attract a good mood, fill the hall with a feeling of festive bustle and the expectation of an unusual, desired and necessary miracle.

Initially, the shapes of the candy bowl were in the form of a drum, a book, a house, but over time they acquired volume. And they acquired images of animals, plants, and, of course, Santa Claus, with a secret inside, where knowledgeable children always found candy, gingerbread and other delicacies.

Over time, the forms changed, they were supplemented with fabric, dried plants, figured decorations, seals, and in this form they have survived to this day.

Currently, the main materials are: cardboard, paper, polymer clay, metal, fabric. But for collectors, the earlier works of the masters, where cotton wool and expensive materials were used, are valuable.

What are bonbonnieres and why are they needed?

The bonbonniere first appeared in France in the 15th century. It was a beautifully designed decorative box with patterns and designs. You could store sweets, cookies, dried fruits and other goodies in it.

French craftsmen made it from wood (for the lower strata of the population), glass, crystal or even gold - for those who could afford it. In original boxes of various shapes, the parents of the newlyweds gave edible gifts to the guests in honor of the holiday. In addition, there was a tradition of giving a bonbonniere for a child’s christening.

Newlyweds give such gifts to each guest as a modest thank you for participating in the celebration and accepting the invitation to the wedding. This is, however, what they did in France: they put a few chocolate-coated nuts or small cookies with fruit filling in a bag and gave it to each guest. This tradition exists so that those present feel welcome and can simply take with them not only warm memories, but also interesting gifts.

Possible execution

A popular option for such wedding accessories is bonbonniere bags. The picture below shows what they usually look like:

Designing them as pouches will give you the greatest advantage as they can be made from different types of fabric.

The most common are linen or burlap, since the choice of these materials ensures their use in the future - all kinds of herbs, coffee beans or just caramels can be stored in bags. If you have time, you can decorate them with embroidery with threads or beads, or decorate them with buttons. Brocade and satin are also used. These materials ensure the beauty of the product and look stylish. When choosing fabric, do not forget about tulle; this transparent material is not suitable for large gifts, but you can easily put sweets or chocolate in such a bag.

Interesting! Another popular option is bonbonniere boxes. They also look very nice. And if you want something more original, cute triangles are a great solution.

DIY bonbonnieres

When starting to create a holiday souvenir yourself, it is worth considering a number of accompanying rules and difficulties.

Prepare working tools and material, a workplace in advance and expect that the work will take about 4-6 hours depending on the complexity of the intended myboner project; in addition, it is important to exercise caution during the registration period

What is a bonbonniere and what is it for? A brief description was given at the beginning of the article. In the workflow you will need:

All work is done carefully, with care so as not to spoil the fragile structure of the entire product. Sweet prizes are placed in advance, taking into account the fact that if you move not carefully, you can ruin the entire composition.

There are a large number of bonbonniere designs in the form of: cakes, formal dresses, berries, standard, with sparkles, bottles, candies, bags and many others.

Classic tulle bonbonnieres are made using brightly colored fabric material:

Beautiful packaging - organza bags! How to sew a lot at once

I pack all my jewelry in handmade organza bags. In this master class I want to tell you how I optimized the process of sewing them. I usually sew 12 bags of different colors, 110*200 mm in size.

So, for 12 bags we will need: organza (0.5 m), satin ribbons (12 m), sewing thread, scissors, pins. For ease of threading of ribbons - a crochet hook.

1. Cut the organza lengthwise to get 2 strips 0.25 m wide.

2. Along the edge, iron a 4 cm wide fold on both cuts.

3. We lay the first line on the floor of the foot from the bottom edge of our fold, sequentially on both sections, without cutting the thread.

4. Place the second line at a distance of 1 cm from the first.

5. Cut each strip of organza into 6 equal parts. It is convenient to do this in 2 layers. We get 12 blanks.

6. Fold each one in half, face inward, and pin together.

7. Sew starting from the top edge of the future bag, do not forget to fasten the thread at the beginning of the line.

8. Turn our bags right side out and iron them.

9. We cut the ribbons into 0.5 m sections.

10. Make holes (I use the seam ripper included with the sewing machine for this; you can take small scissors with sharp ends). We make 4 holes in total (we cut only the top layer of fabric!)

11. Insert ribbons (it’s very convenient to do this with a crochet hook), tie knots.

12. Our first beautiful bag is ready!

I will be glad if the master class is useful!

Scheme and stages of creation

Template - print a photo of the envelope on a sheet of paper, cut it out and attach it to a blank sheet of paper. Mark the lines where you will need to fold the envelope and glue it, then carefully bend the ends and glue it. You can use the idea of a “seal” like in old films: red, with the coat of arms of the future family.

To make the bonbonniere bags neat and identical, you can use a plate as a universal pattern to get identical mugs for future bags. We place the plate on the tulle, make marks with soap on which piece of fabric to cut and cut out circles. Place sweets in the center of the circle, form a bag and tie with a ribbon. There are several variations in the photo on how you can do this.
