MPs will be asked to undergo unconscious bias training as part of a new campaign to tackle discrimination and racism in Parliament, according to reports.

The House of Commons is set to launch a pilot program that will seek to educate MPs about their potential unconscious biases.

Meanwhile, a new group is being created to push forward reforms and ensure staff concerns about inequality are taken seriously.

It comes after research found minority staff were more likely to be asked to show their Parliament House passes, and after incidents of managers confusing BAME colleagues.

Unconscious bias training has been offered to House of Common staff since 2016.

The classes will now be rolled out to MPs, but there are concerns that the proposed pilot project is not enough.

One black former member of the Commons told The Times: “Mandatory unconscious bias training has existed in Parliament for many years and it has made no difference to the racism faced by black staff.

"Lady Laura Cox's report should have brought about radical change, but that did not happen for black staff."

Research published in February this year by parliamentary minority parliamentary network Parlireach reported cases of senior leaders misnaming BAME staff or “lumping them together with other BAME colleagues”.

Parlireach also found that BAME employees were more likely to be stopped by security guards and asked to see their badge.

The decision to introduce unconscious bias training for MPs comes after Sir Keir Starmer said in July it was being introduced across the workforce.

Sir Keir said at the time that he was "going to lead this from the top and get that training done first".

Speaking amid widespread Black Lives Matter protests, the Labor leader said he believed "everyone should have unconscious bias training" and that "it's important."

Meanwhile, members of the Community Executive Council have vowed to make improvements amid concerns that a series of major reviews into bullying and discrimination have failed to result in effective action.

John Benger, the House clerk, is leading a new group created in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement to fight discrimination, The Times reported.

Mr Benger is said to have told staff in a message that he recognized the "power, privileges and responsibilities that come with my position".

He pledged to "tackle racism, remove barriers and work for a more diverse and representative House of Commons."

A House of Commons statement said: “Racism has no place in Parliament. We recognize we must speak out about it and are committed to change.

“Our priority is to create a truly inclusive workplace where everyone is treated with respect and can thrive.

“We recognize that we still have work to do and we are listening, learning and taking action to remove barriers and more effectively reduce inequalities in the future.”
